Innovative Capstone for OME Solutions

This document discusses using biomedical engineering capstone projects as a vehicle for translational research. It provides an example of a capstone team that developed an improved surgical instrument for inserting ventilation tubes to treat otitis media with effusion. Their prototype led to a provisional patent, pre-clinical and clinical trials, and an international licensing deal. The document advocates for involving undergraduate biomedical engineering students in translational research through capstone projects, which can bolster innovation and provide medically-motivated students with creative, interdisciplinary experiences. Over three years, UVA BME capstone projects have resulted in 20 peer-reviewed publications, 10 provisional patents filed, and 3 full patent applications. Challenges include intellectual property

Clinical Problem: Otitis Media with Effusion (OME)

Fluid in middle ear Symptoms of ear pressure,
fullness, hearing loss, and balance difficulties

Untreated, OME can cause permanent hearing loss and speech and language difficulties seen most commonly in children

Current Standard of Care Treatment

Myringotomy with ventilation tube insertion: Decreases pain Restores hearing Prevents reaccumulation of fluids Ventilates middle ear space Improves balance

Clinical Need: Improve existing surgical technique

Instruments unable to hold and precisely manipulate the small ear tubes; multiple instruments required to insert the tube risk of damage to ear canal
