Definition
Blu-ray is an optical disc format designed to display high definition video and store large amounts of data. The format's name comes from the fact that ablue laser reads from and writes to the disc .

HISTORY
1st GENERATION:
Compact disc (CD): --- 650/700 MB It is with us for over 20 years. Wavelength of laser which reads data: 780 nm Color of laser: Red 2nd GENERATION: Digital versatile disc (DVD): --- 4.7 GB It offers high quality sound and video than CD. Wavelength of laser which reads data: 650 nm Color of laser: Red

HISTORY
3rd GENERATION:
Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB
-Next generation optical disc format. -Developed by blu-ray disc association (which includes Apple, Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony) -Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm -Color of laser: Blue-violet which was developed by SHUJI NAKAMURA at NICHIA CORPORATION

FORMAT OF BD
It comes in four different formats: BD-ROM (read only) : for reading recorded content. BD-R (recordable) : for PC data storage. BD-RW (rewritable) : for PC data storage. BD-RE (rewritable) : for HDTV (high definition
television) recording.

TYPES OF BD:
SINGLE LAYER :
- Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that means 2
hrs of HD video or about 13 hrs of standard video. DOUBLE LAYER :
- Can hold data up to 50 GB that means 4.5
hrs of HD video or more than 20 hrs of standard video.

Working
The blu ray disc overcimes dvd reading issue by
placing the data on top of a 1.1mm thick polycarbonate [Link] the data on top prevents referigance and there for prevents readability [Link] with the recording layers siting the closer to the object lense of the reading mechanism, the problem of disc tilt is virtually [Link] the data is close to the surface,a hard coating is place on the out of the disc to protected it from scrathes and finger print

Why it is name blu -ray
The name blu ray is derived from
underlaying [Link] utilizes blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination ofblue (blue violet laser) and ray(optical ray)

Application
Many of the famous studios are releasing
there thire movies on BLUE- ray DVD As it provides greater storage capacity so more ammount of data that can be stored in more protective manner as compared to convectional DVD Sony is releasing game DVD in BLU- ray formate for their home video game console

THE TECHNOLOGY
Pits : spiral grooves that
run from the centre of the disc to its edges
Bumps : other sides of these
edges.
Track pitch : it is the
distance between the two tracks (of pits) on the surface. -------------------------------Disc store digitally encoded data in PITS. --------------------------------

THE TECHNOLOGY
So, in blu-ray disc: Pit size 0.15 microns ( more than twice as small as the pits on DVD ) Track-pitch is : 0.32 microns Laser needed : blue-violet laser (405 nm) Data transfer rate : 36 Mbps

ADVANTAGE
It give high storage capacity
It can be used to be store about 4.5 hours of
high definition videos It provides better data protection It can be burned while reading it

13
Disadvantage
Compatibility: Blu-ray dvd are not compatible with cd dvd ROMs available these days it is quiet expensive

FEATURES OF BD
With BD we can: Record HDTV without any quality loss Instantly skip to any spot on disc Record one program while watching other on the disc Edit or reorder programs recorded on disc Automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid recording over a program And many more
