Importance of Hand Hygiene in Healthcare

This presentation discusses the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare settings. It begins by defining hand hygiene and noting its role in removing microorganisms. Several studies are cited showing that hand hygiene, particularly washing hands between patient contacts, reduces the spread of germs. However, compliance with hand washing guidelines is often poor due to factors like heavy workloads and skin irritation. Potential solutions include making hand sanitizers more accessible, increasing education, and involving patients.

Objective:

By the end of this presentation you will be able to:

Identify the meaning of hand hygiene. Know the important of hand hygiene. What is the important of cleaning hand between patient. Way we you to clean your hand. Identify hand hygiene barriers. Find some solution. Discuss study related to hand hygiene.

What is hand hygiene?

Hand hygiene relates to the removal of visible soil and the removal or killing of transient microorganisms from the hands and may be accomplished using soap and running water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

Why is hand hygiene so important?

Hand hygiene is an important practice for health care providers and has a significant impact on reducing the spread of infections in hospitals. Hand hygiene is a different way of thinking about safety and patient care and involves everyone in the hospital, including patients and health care providers. Effective hand hygiene practices in hospitals play a key role in improving patient and provider safety, and in preventing the spread of health care-associated infections.

Many studies have shown that the bacteria that cause hospital-acquired infections are most frequently spread from one patient to another on the hands of healthcare workers The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other healthcare-related organizations believe that cleaning your hands before and after having contact with patients is one of the most important measures for preventing the spread of bacteria in healthcare settings.

Yes!
Several studies have shown that washing hands between patient contacts reduces the spread of germs in healthcare facilities.

Why is compliance with recommended hand washing so poor?

Here are some reasons why healthcare workers do not wash their hands as often as they should: heavy workloads (too busy). skin irritation caused by frequent use of soap and water. hands dont look dirty. sinks are poorly located. hand washing takes too long .

Personnel with heavy workloads have little time to wash their hands
A recent study showed that the busier healthcare workers are, the less likely they are to wash their hands when recommended

Hand washing Compliance Increasing Workload

Another reason why personnel dont wash their hands often

Frequent hand washing with soap and water often causes skin irritation and dryness. In the winter months, some personnel may even develop cracks in their skin that cause bleeding, as seen in the adjacent figure.

Many personnel dont realize when they have germs on their hands
Nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers can get 100s or 1000s of bacteria on their hands by doing simple tasks, like pulling patients up in bed taking a blood pressure or pulse touching a patients hand rolling patients over in bed touching the patients gown or bed sheets touching equipment like bedside rails, overbed tables, IV pumps

Hand Hygiene Techniques

Routine hand wash 10-15 seconds

Aseptic procedures 1 minute

Surgical wash 3-5 minutes

Routine Hand Wash

Alcohol Hand Rubs
Require less time. Can be strategically placed. Readily accessible. Multiple sites. All patient care areas. Acts faster. Excellent bactericidal activity. Less irritating. Sustained improvement.

More than 20 published studies have shown that alcohol-based hand rubs are more effective than either plain soap or antibacterial soaps in reducing the number of live bacteria on the hands.

Hand hygiene barriers

Lack of Knowledge. Lack of experience and education. Skin irritation. Lack of evidence that hand hygiene definitely prevents healthcare associated infections. Too busy. Wearing gloves. Forgetting. Lack of encouragement or reward. Skepticism about the effectiveness of hand hygiene. Lack of a role model

Solution

Provide free lotion or barrier creams to prevent dry hands. Educate staff on importance of hand hygiene. Guideline awareness and indications for hand hygiene during patient care Explain the low rates for hand hygiene among the majority of healthcare providers Patients are Partners in Treatment. Practice. Monitoring and reward if needed. Poster in unit. Brochures.
