COURSE DESCRIPTION Mentoring embraces several important aspects in ministry such as personal development, accountability, apprenticeship, and nurturing. Mentoring also combines the aspects of discipleship and then covers it in various forms of: [Link] Development, [Link] Formation, and 3. Church Growth. RATIONALE Mentoring has been a part of church development from the very inception of the Christian church. Some of the important parts that make it so valuable are: encouraged to build up one another; facilitate one another in Christian service, and grow unto Christian maturity. The problems, then, lie in the inability or lack of structured formats that provide an essential training and preparation field like mentoring. Secondly, mentoring can be exclusive, inclusive, formal, informal, intentional, unintentional, and finally, limited or unlimited. There are many avenues in which can use and engage in mentoring. Finding the right fit is essential to the success of the mentoring relationship. For our purposes related to this course, the mentoring principle shall include a variety of all above mentioned, with the initial portion being formal (classroom setting), intentional (syllabus and course outline), and structured (course requirements).

COURSE OBJECTIVES During the study of this course, the student will:

Begin to develop the concepts of mentoring as related to church ministry, ministry development, leadership development, and finally, outreach and church growth factors that require strong and mature leaders that occur from mentoring ministry.

Examine the biblical nature of the New Testament concepts to mentoring and its parallels in discipleship, apprenticeship, and teaching/student roles.

Gain an understanding of the nature of mentoring concepts.

Evaluate experiences and journeys of individuals related to church growth development through various personal and corporate mentoring programs.

Discussion Board Forums (6 total) Each student will participate in weekly Discussion Board forums where students interact with each other and the instructor. Topics will be posted and the student will be graded on both participation and responses to other students and/or the instructor.

Book Reading Reports: Please complete a two page paper giving an overall evaluation of the two required reading books. Include your personal thoughts and summary. Highlight at least two aspects from the book (s) that intrigued you. The paper is to be double-spaced and placed in a Word document using Times New Roman style and 12 point size. Do not exceed two pages. Give a title page for each report.

Do this for every page that you are using- three columns for each pageUse two legal pads if necessary Next, brainstorm all the important events, people, and situations that have occurred in your life. Write out all events, good or bad. Write in all the people, good, influential, negative, or destructive. Write in all the situations in your life, good and bad. If this is a hard and time consuming project, thats good., because this exercise is to encourage honest, healthy and focused reflection in your life. NOTE: please write them in chronological order the best that you can. Write out everything! Next, use the third legal pad to write out all the events, people, and situations, into an autobiography. This and the other two legal pads are to serve for the implementation of the second phase of the project. In the autobiography, I want you to write out: 1. some areas that stand out to you; 2. areas that meant allot to you; 3. your assessment of your life journeys; 4. what do you hope to learn from your autobiography experience?

Focus Wheel Model for Project


Focus wheel is a program to help each student work on 8 specific areas. See Below! Each focus contains four lines for each spoke (focus). Each line requires a different answer. MENTORING PROJECT Each student is required to implement a mentoring program that they are responsible to maintain.

The mentoring program requires the contract between the student and one mentor who is in a position of leadership in the local church in which he serves. Or, he may choose someone that meets the criteria for mentoring. The student shall meet one time a week with the mentor for at least one hour. The student shall make a copy of his biography available to the mentor, and provide discussion related to journey, ministry, focus wheel, books, as a part of the formal meeting portion of mentoring. The student shall spend at least 4/6 sessions discussing Biblical values related to discipleship, mentoring, and apprenticeship- as found in the Focus Wheel Project. The mentor shall provide an evaluation of the students progress and development over the 8 week period. Evaluation from mentor is submitted along with contract in order to receive full credit for sessions. Contract and Evaluations are listed below

These are three Aspects to consider in the Application of

Leadership Development:

First, some observations for you to consider: 1. Equilateral TriangleNotice that all three sides are equal in the development. 2. Mentoring is at the base of the trianglesignificant for permanency. 3. The triangle provides the view of holistic ministry and focus for the leader.

This is one of the most overlooked aspects of leadership development in the church today. Yet, in my model I have put it as the foundation for Leadership development. Many people have expressed their concern for Mentoring of leaders and Christians for many years, men like George Barna, Billy Graham, Warren Bennis, Bob Biehl, J. Robert Clinton, Aubrey Malphurs, and Leighton Ford, just to name a few. Why? From a statistical standpoint it has been reported that nearly 92% of all Christian lack spiritual mentoring from other Christian leaders that will enhance their spiritual relationship with God, to be in a state of transformative power for God in their new faith. This is a needed and yet neglected resource in the life of the Body of Christ, and I believe a key link to the triangle of Leadership Development among churches today.

Having been a coach, teacher, pastor, and student I have seen allot of people in various settings. Heart, passion, and desire are far greater measuring stakes than ability alone. I heard a quote one time from the great Howie Long, formerly of the Oakland/Los Angels Raiders. He said that not all the best, fastest, and most talented are on the football field, but those with heart and passion, they are the ones who made it and became professionals. He should know, he was an 8th round draft choice out of Villanova. They dont even have eight rounds anymore. God qualifies the called, not calls the qualified. Too often people are awarded, but not for their efforts, as much as their outcome. Someone hashad a lifetime of mentorees and is serious about discipleship, therefore his time is long and painstaking. And he may have some fruit, but fruit nevertheless. The leader who invests in people can never miss the work of God.

Say this with meChange is hard! Did you say it. The truth about Spiritual Formations is that it is about letting GOD change your life from the outside in. spiritual Formation is not about doing things better, its really about being able to be fully equipped for the sake of Gods Divine purpose; to shape and mold you into His Holy Be Ye Holy as He is Holy is the, Divine Imperative for your life. What things do believe are essential to your spiritual; Formation Here they are? 1. Quality Time spent with God. Of all the people that I have met, read, or asked, they believe there is no replacement for time spent with God; in prayer, in meditation, in reading, and in preparation for life changes. When you are at that place , expect God to begin to bless you and equip you in ways yet seen. The triangle is incomplete without the work of Spiritual Formation in your Life.

The Jeremiah Principle One of my favorite Old Testament figures is Jeremiah. No one and I mean no one wanted to have the ministry assignment that either Jeremiah or Job had.
