Steam Table

The document discusses the properties of saturated liquid water in a rigid tank, determining pressure and volume based on standard atmospheric conditions and steam tables. It calculates the change in volume and energy transferred when 200g of saturated liquid water is vaporized at a constant pressure of 100 kPa. Key values include saturation pressure, specific volume, and enthalpy for the phase change process.

Steam Tables

1. A rigid tank contains saturated liquid water. Determine the pressure and volume of the
tank.
Since the tank contains saturated liquid water, its pressure corresponds to the saturation
pressure at the given temperature. However, no temperature is provided in the problem,
so we assume standard atmospheric pressure conditions unless otherwise stated. From the
steam tables, at 100°C, the saturation pressure is:
Psat =101.325 kPa≅ 1 atmFrom the steam tables, the specific volume of saturated liquid
water at 100°C is:
3
v f =0.001043 m If the mass is given, we can calculate the actual volume. If not, the
volume remains:
3
V =m∗0.001043 m
2. A mass of 200g of saturated liquid water is completely vaporized at constant pressure of
100 kPa (almost 100 degrees Celsius). Determine (a) the change in volume, and (b) the
amount of energy transferred to the water.
Given:
0.2 kg water
Initial state: Saturated liquid water
Final state: Completely vaporized (saturated vapor)
Process: Constant pressure at 100 kPa
Steam Table: From the saturated water tables at 100°C (P = 100 kPa)

v f =0.001043 v g=1.6270 h fg =2257 . 92 Find: ∆ V , Q

Solution:
3
∆ V =V f −V g =( 0.2 ) ( 0.001043 )−( 0.2 )( 1.6270 ) ≅ 0.3342 m
Q=m∗h fg =( 0.2 ) (2257.92 ) ≅ 451.58 kJ
