RESEARCHING ACTIVITY AT HOME….
PREFIX, INFIX AND SUFFIX´S ACTIVITY…..
4TH YEAR.
What is a prefix?
A prefix is a letter or group of letters, for example 'un-' or 'multi-', which is added to the
beginning of a word in order to form a different word. For example, the prefix 'un-' is added to '
happy' to form 'unhappy'.
The most common prefixes are a-, be-, de-, dis-, ex-, in-, mis-, non-, over-, pre-, re-, uni- and
with. These prefixes appear most often in academic vocabulary.
What is a prefix word in English grammar?
Prefix is a group of letters (sometimes a single letter) which is added at the start of a base word
to alter its meaning. Example of a prefix: Use of the letters “hemi-” before the word ”sphere” to
create a new word hemisphere which means half of a sphere.
What is an infix?
An infix is a word part, called a morpheme, added to the middle of a word stem to alter or
emphasize meaning or grammatical form.
What are infixes and examples?
Infixes are, however, useful in pluralizing unusual words such as "mother-in-law." The plural
form would be "mothers-in-law," adding the infix "-s" to the first noun. Infixes are also used to
intensify the base word.
What is a sufix?
Suffixes are one or more letters added to the end of a base word to change its conjugation, word
type, or other grammar properties like plurality. For example, you can add the suffix -s to the
noun strength to make it plural (strengths) or add the suffix –en to turn it into a verb
(strengthen).
Some examples:
suffix examples of nouns
-ee employee, payee, trainee
-er/-or driver, writer, director
-hood brotherhood, childhood, neighbourhood
-ism capitalism, Marxism, socialism (philosophies)
