ACTIVITY: Turmeric Research Centre, Thoppampalayam.

We have visited Turmeric Research Centre and discussed about RHWE activities with Dr.
T. Sumathi, Asst. Prof. (Hort.),TRC, Bhavanisagar (group facilitator).

ACTIVITY: Visit to Integrated Agriculture Extension Centre, Bhavanisagar

We visited Integrated Agriculture Extension Centre, Bhavanisagar. We discussed with Mrs.


Brindha (ADH) and collected details about major crop, area and production in Bhavanisagar.
Total area in Bhavanisagar block is about 3400ha .Major crops cultivated are

o Banana(1450ha)
o Jasmine(358ha)
o Coconut(600ha)
o Arecanut(300ha)
o Mullai(160ha)

ACTIVITY: Vist to Integrated Agriculture Extension Centre, Bhavanisagar

ADH listed the active schemes and horticulture potential villages

Villages include Kothamangalam, Pungur, Baguthampalayam, Akkaraithathapalli,


Ikkaraithathapalli, Boosaripalaym, Thottapalaym

 NHM (National Horticultural Mission) (ACTIVITY: Providing hybrid vegetable


seedlings and fruit seedlings (mango, guava, sapota, acid lime) for HDP
plantation
 NHBM (National Honey Bee Mission) (ACTIVITY: Training on bee rearing and
providence of colonies, hives, extractor)

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED: Price fluctuation

We have visited Mr. Rajendran, a farmer in Uthandiyur village. He owns 4.5 acres of
land in which he is cultivating banana. He uses fertilizers like All 16 complex, DAP. The
market for sales is Sathyamangalam and Bhavani amman FPO. A spacing of 7 x 7 ft is
followed in 11 month crop.

FARMER’S NAME 2 : Mrs. Rajammal

VILLAGE: Uthandiyur

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (50 cents)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming


SOIL TYPE: Red loamy soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Coconut

VARIETY: Tall

We have visited Mrs. Rajammal, a farmer in Uthandiyur village. He owns 50


cents of land in which she is growing coconut. He uses fertilizers like All Urea, DAP, Potash. A
spacing of 25ft x 25ft is followed. Trees are about 12 years old. Harvesting is done once in 45
days.

FARMER’S NAME 3: Mr. Selvaraj

VILLAGE: Uthandiyur

LAND HOLDING: 5 acre

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red loamy soil


IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Thean nendran), Mullai

We have visited Mr. Selvaraj, a farmer in Uthandiyur village. He owns 5 acres of land in
which he is cultivating banana and mullai. He does sucker treatment with Monocrotophos,
Blue copper. Drip irrigation for 15 days once. He uses fertilizers like All 16 complex, DAP. A
spacing of 7 x 7 ft is followed in 11 month crop. A single bunch weight is about 20kg. The
market for sales is Sathyamangalam and Bhavani amman FPO.

Mullai crop is about 5 years old. Pruning is done once in a year during winter
season. Yield is low during winter.

FARMER’S NAME 4: Mr. Kavimani

VILLAGE: Uthandiyur
LAND HOLDING: 8 acre

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Grand nine, Quintal Nendran, Red banana)

PROBLEMS: Nematode, Pseudostem borer

 We have visited Mr. Kavimani, a farmer in Uthandiyur village. He owns


8 acres of land in which he is cultivating banana. He does sucker
treatment with Monocrotophos, Blue copper. He uses Gramix
herbicide. He uses groundnut cake with water. Neem cake is used
along with urea and DAP. Biofertilizers viz, Trichoderma and
Pseudomonas are utilized.Goatmanure is applied 40 days after
planting as organic manure. He uses fertilizers like All 16 complex,
DAP. A spacing of 6.5 x 6.5ft in Grand naine, 7 x 7 ft is followed in
Quintal Nendran and Red banana. It is a 4 month old crop. A single
bunch weight is about 20kg. The marketing is done with Kerala buyers
and Local buyers. The price of per kg is about Rs. 15 to 40.

Preparation of Fish Amino acid is carried out by the farmer.

Materials required
 Fish waste 10kg
 Jaggery 10kg
 Poovan banana 10kg
 Papaya 2 nos
 Dates 1kg

Steps

 All the ingredients are filled in an airtight drum.


 No water should be added.
 Let the ingredients ferment for 21 days.
 Once it is ready, it becomes devoid of the foul smell.
 Once the fish amino acid is ready, it is to be filtered.
 The filtered fish amino acid can be applied to the field through fertigation,
soil application or through foliar spray using a power sprayer.

A formulation has been made to control the pseudostem borer.

The formulation includes

 Chlorpyrifos- 1L
 Blue Copper- 1kg
 Humic acid- 3L
 SAAF- 1kg
 Boron- 1kg
Mix all the materials in 1000L water and use it for 1000 plants of 3 month
old.

ACTIVITY: VSP

Visit to Govt Nursery, Alampalayam

The nursery was established under MNREGA. Mrs. Gayathri is the incharge of nursery. They
are growing seedlings of

 Neem
 Jamun
 Kodukapuli
 Badam
 Pungai

The potting mixture is red soil 1 : coir pith 1. They use these seedlings for roadside planting.

FARMER’S NAME 4: Mr. Sakthivel

VILLAGE: Pungur

LAND HOLDING: 4 acre

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Grand naine) , Jathimullai

PROBLEMS: Eryophid mite

We have visited Mr. Sakthivel, a farmer in Pungur village. He owns 4 acres of land in which
he is cultivating Banana and Jathimullai. He does sucker treatment with Monocrotophos,
Blue copper. Drip irrigation for 15 days once. He uses fertilizers like,Urea, DAP. A spacing of
6x 6 ft is followed in 6 month crop.He uses Bavistin and Monocrotophos for leaf spot. A
single bunch weight is about 20kg. The market for sales is Sathyamangalam and Bhavani
amman FPO.

Mullai crop is about 5 years old. Pruning is done once in a year during winter
season.Spacing 5.5x5.5ft Yield is low during winter. He uses Sulphur and furadan for mite
infection.

FARMER’S NAME 2: Mr. Ponnusamy

VILLAGE: Karachikorai

LAND HOLDING: 3.5 acre

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Red banana), Mullai, Arecanut (Mangala), Coconut (border crop)

PROBLEMS: Labour scarcity

We have visited Mr. Ponnusamy, a farmer in Karachikorai village. He owns 3.5 acres of land in
which he is cultivating Banana and Mullai and Arecanut. Red banana is cultivated in 0.5 acres
which is about 7 months old. Mullai is cultivated in 1 acre. Arecanut is cultivated in 1.5 acres
which is about 4 years old. He does sucker treatment with Monocrotophos. He uses
fertilizers like,Urea, DAP. A spacing of 6x 6 ft is followed in Mullai and 7x7ft in Red banana
and Arecanut. Coconut trees planted in border are affected by sooty mould. A single bunch
weight of banana is about 10kg. The market for sales is Sathyamangalam.

Mullai crop is about 4 years old. Pruning is done once in a year during winter
season while flowering takes places after 2 months after pruning. Yield and price is low
during winter.

We visited Karachikorai village and we conducted PRA by using various tools of PRA
among the people in the village. This tools incude

evening segments. Participants identify and record their daily activities, such as farming,
household chores or leisure time, along the time axis. Daily activity maps help identify how
people allocate their time and resources, highliting areas of efficiency or inefficiency.
Mobility map

Mobility maps help identify patterns of migration, including seasonal or permanent


movements. By mapping movement patterns, mobility maps can reveal access to resources,
such as markets, health care or education.
Cause and Effect map

Cause and Effect maps are used in rural development projects to understand
community problems and develop solutions. They help identify the cause and effects of
health issues, informing initiatives to improve health outcomes.

FARMER’S NAME 2: Mr. Nagaraj

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Mullai

We have visited Mr. Nagaraj, a farmer in Pungur village. He owns 1 acres of land in which he
is cultivating Mullai. A spacing of 5x5ft is practiced. Mullai crop is about 3 years old. Pruning
is done once in a year during winter season. Yield and price is low during winter. Eryophid
mite infection is noticed. Sulphur dust is sprayed to control mite. Application of DAP, Potash
is followed. Organic manure like FYM and goat manure are applied. FYM 1 ton costs about
Rs.2000. Yield of mullai crop about 6kg per day is harvested in early morning hours.

Social maps help participants visualize and understand the complex social
relationships within the community. By mapping social networks, participants can identify
key influencers, leaders and connectors.

Crop matrix

Crop matrix is a tool where farmers collectively rank and score different crops,
varieties or farming practices based on their own criteria to reveal community preferences,
problems and priorities, making decision making transparent and identifying needs for
agricultural development.
Wealth matrix

Wealth matrix is a flexible and valuable qualitative method that involves the local
community in defining poverty and stratifying households by their economic level.
Daily activity map

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: small farmer (4 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming.

SOIL TYPE: clay soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran), Jathimulai, Coconut (Tall coconut), Cholam


We have visited Mr. Velusamy, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village. Banana is cultivated in 1
acre of land which is about 6 months old with a spacing of 7x7 ft. Jathimullai is grown in
0.25acre of land which is about 2 years old with a spacing of 6x6 ft. Coconut (Tall variety) is
grown in 1 acre of land with a spacing of 7x7 ft. Coconut trees are 3 years old age.

Organic manures like FYM and neem cake are applied. Fertilizers like Urea, DAP,
Potash are applied in soil. 5 no of cows and 2 goats are reared. Average bunch weight of
banana is 23 to 25kg.
FARMER’S NAME 2: Mrs. Saraswati

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (10 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Clay soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran, Kathali), Tobbaco

PROBLEMS: Leaf spot, Pseudostem borer

We have visited Mrs. Saraswati, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village. Quintal


Nendran banana is cultivated in 1 acre of land which is about 2.5 months old with a spacing
of 7x7 ft and Kathali cultivated in 7 acre which is about 1 year. Tobacco is cultivated in 2 acre
which is 1 month old crops. Sucker treatment with Monocrotophos is practiced to avoid soil
diseases and nematode problem. FYM is applied which is produced from their own 1 cattle
and 1 calf. Neem cake and poultry manure are applied in soil. Price of 1 kg banana is Rs.12
and average bunch weight is around 23 to 25kg.
FARMER’S NAME 2: Mr. Marappa Gounder

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (6 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran, Red banana), Malli

PROBLEMS: Sigatoka Leaf spot, Pseudostem weevil

We have visited Mr. Marappa Gounder, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village.


Quintal Nendran and Red banana occupy 3 acres of land. Banana crops are planted at a
distance of 7x7 ft spacing which are about 3 months old. Sucker treatment with
Monocrotophos is practiced to avoid soil diseases and nematode problem. FYM, neem cake
and poultry manure are applied in soil. Price of 1 kg banana is Rs.20 and average bunch
weight is around 15kg.
Malli is cultivated in 3 acres of land. Plants are planted at a spacing of 5x5ft
apart. Pruning is done once in a year. Yield of 5 to 10 kg is harvested per day. The price
fluctuates from Rs.100 during peak flowering season to Rs.1000 during less flowering
season. 2 milch cows are being reared.

FARMER’S NAME 4: Mr. Oothaiyappan

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (6 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran), Tobbaco

PROBLEMS: Sigatoka leaf spot in banana , Nematode in tobacco


We have visited Mr. Oothaiyappan, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village.
Quintal Nendran banana is cultivated in 1 acre of land which is about 4 months old with a
spacing of 7x7 ft. Sucker treatment with Monocrotophos is practiced during planting. Urea
and DAP are applied. Price of 1 kg banana is Rs.15. Tobacco is cultivated in 1 and a 1/2 acre
which is 4 month old crop. Nematode is a major problem in the tobacco field. Price of 1kg
dried leaves of tobacco is around Rs.90 to 100.

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (5.5 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran, Kadali, Grand Naine), Mullai, Malli

PROBLEMS: Pseudostem weevil, Wild boar

We have visited Mrs. Kothainayaki, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village.


Banana is cultivated in 2.5 acres of land which is about 5 months old with a spacing of 7x7 ft.
Sucker treatment with Blue Copper is practiced during planting. Urea, Potash and DAP are
applied. Coconut (Tall variety) are planted in borders of the field. Few plants viz, chilli, cluster
bean, tomato, brinjal, snake gourd, bittergourd and coccinia are interplanted among 3 rows
of banana for household purpose.
Malli and Mullai are cultivated in 3 acres of land with a spacing of 4x4 ft is
followed. Crops are about 10 years old. Pruning is done once in a year.

FARMER’S NAME 4: Mrs. Rajeswari

VILLAGE: Thoppampalayam

LAND HOLDING: Small farmer (10 acre)

AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM: Inorganic farming

SOIL TYPE: Red soil

IRRIGATION METHOD: Drip irrigation

CROPS: Banana (Quintal nendran), Malli, Cholam

PROBLEMS: Pseudostem weevil in banana, Eriyophid mite in malli, labour scarcity

We have visited Mrs. Rajeswari, a farmer in Thoppampalaym village. Quintal


Nendran banana is cultivated in 5 acres of land which is about 5 months old with a spacing
of 7x7 ft. Sucker treatment with Monocrotophos is practiced during planting. Urea, Potash,
All 19, Calcium Nitrate and DAP are applied. Organic manures like coconut cake and sesame
cake. After crop completion, crop rotation is practiced with green manures like sunhemp.
The marketing is done with local buyers.

Malli is planted in 1 acre of land with a spacing of 4x4 ft. It is a 10 year old
crop. Cholam is sown in 4 acres of land for fodder purpose. 1 milch cow is reared.
