Synthesis of ZIF-67
Simple Precipitation Method Using 20 mL Ethanol
An Experimental Protocol for Metal-Organic Frameworks
Introduction to ZIF-67
What is ZIF67? Key Properties
ZIF67 Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67) is a • High Porosity: Large surface area for
subclass of Metal-Organic Frameworks MOFs. adsorption.
• Thermal Stability: Stable up to 400°C.
It consists of Cobalt Co²⁺ metal nodes
• Chemical Stability: Resistant to various

The 20 mL Protocol
A modified, economical approach to synthesizing ZIF67 using
minimal solvent volume for rapid precipitation.
Step 1: Precursor Preparation
Prepare Two Separate Solutions
Solution A Metal
Dissolve 0.5g Cobalt Nitrate Hexahydrate in 10
mL Ethanol. Stir until clear pink solution forms.
Solution B Linker
Dissolve 2.0g 2Methylimidazole in 10 mL
Ethanol. Stir until clear colorless solution forms.
Total Ethanol Volume = 20 mL
Step 2: Mixing &
Precipitation
The Reaction
Pour Solution B Linker rapidly into Solution A Metal
while stirring.
Observation
The solution will instantly turn cloudy purple. This
indicates the rapid coordination of Cobalt ions with the
Imidazolate linkers to form insoluble ZIF67 nuclei.
Step 3: Aging Conditions
To ensure high crystallinity and uniform particle size, the mixture requires an aging period.

ions.
Formation Mechanism
Chemical Reaction
The 2-methylimidazole loses a proton to become the
imidazolate anion, which bridges Cobalt centers. The
result is a porous framework with SOD (sodalite)
topology.

Applications of ZIF-67
Water Treatment: Excellent adsorption capacity for removing organic dyes and heavy metals from wastewater.
Energy Storage: Used as a precursor for Cobalt-based electrode materials in supercapacitors due to its high surface
area.
Catalysis: The porous structure acts as an efficient host for catalytic reactions, including oxygen evolution reactions
OER.
