CERTIFICATE

This is to certify that this project on the character sketch of the Grandmother from ‘The Portrait of a
Lady’ has been completed by me as part of my academic work.

INTRODUCTION

This project presents a detailed character sketch of the Grandmother from Khushwant Singh’s
chapter ‘The Portrait of a Lady’. It explores her traits, actions, role and significance in the story.

PROCEDURE

I referred to the NCERT Class 11 English textbook and classroom notes. I analysed the narrative,
highlighted key character traits and structured the findings into sections.

CHARACTER SKETCH: THE GRANDMOTHER

The grandmother in Khushwant Singh’s autobiographical piece ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ is one of the
most memorable figures in modern Indian literature. Through the narrator’s recollections, she
appears not only as a guardian and caretaker but also as a symbol of love, faith, simplicity and
selfless duty.

TRAITS

She is kind-hearted, gentle and selfless. Her deep religious faith shapes her personality. She is
calm, patient and devoted to her daily prayers. She never complains and accepts change with quiet
dignity.

APPEARANCE

She is portrayed as an elderly woman with a peaceful face, silver hair and a stooped body. Her
wrinkles seem countless, making it hard for the narrator to imagine her as young. She always
dresses in spotless white.

ACTIONS

She wakes the narrator, gets him ready for school and accompanies him to the village school. She
reads scriptures in the temple while he studies. She feeds the village dogs. In the city, even though
she cannot help with his modern subjects, she supports him silently. When he returns from abroad,
she celebrates joyfully.

ROLE
She is a guiding light in the narrator’s early life. She shapes his values and adds emotional depth to
the story. She represents the older generation whose simplicity contrasts with modern education.

IMPORTANCE

The grandmother brings emotional warmth to the story. She teaches values like devotion, patience
and humility. Her life reflects unconditional love and spiritual strength, leaving a lasting impact on
the narrator.

CONCLUSION

The grandmother remains unforgettable for her pure, selfless love and unwavering devotion. She
symbolizes timeless affection and the quiet influence of elders in our lives.
