1. INTRODUCTION

Dear Student

Welcome to EUP1501 – Ethical Information and Communications Technologies for Development

Solutions.

Because this is a fully online module, you will need to use myUnisa to study and complete the
learning activities for this module. Visit the website for EUP1501 on myUnisa frequently. The
website for your module is EUP1501-22-S1.

Owing to the nature of this module, you can read about the module and find your study material
online. Go to the website at [Link] and log in using your student number and
password. You will see [EUP1501-22-S1] in the row of modules displayed in the orange blocks at
the top of the webpage. Select the More tab if you cannot find the module you require in the
blocks displayed. Then click on the module you want to open.

2. CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION

Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and learning
agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the
pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning,
and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both programme and module levels as a phased-in approach. You will notice a marked
change in the teaching and learning strategy implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is
conceptualised in your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies
at Unisa in a responsive way within the framework of transformation.

3. HOW TO STUDY ONLINE

Studying fully online modules differs completely from studying some of your other modules at Unisa.

All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be delivered online
on myUnisa.

• All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you do all your activities and
submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post your assignments
to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All communication between you and the University happens online. The EUP academic team
and your teaching assistants will communicate to you by email and sms, as well as using the
Announcements, the Discussion Forums, and the Questions and Answers tools.

3. STUDY MATERIAL THAT WILL BE POSTED TO YOU

The Department of Despatch at UNISA should supply you with the following physical study
materials:

• For this module, you will only receive (this) Tutorial letter 101 in printed format. This Tutorial
letter 101 is also available on myUNISA.

4

5. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES - GENERAL

5.1. First-Year Experience Programme @ Unisa

For many students, the transition from school education to tertiary education is beset with anxiety.
This is also true for first-time students to Unisa. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and e-learning
institution. Unlike face-to-face/contact institutions, Unisa is somewhat different. It is a mega university
and all our programmes are offered through a blended learning mode or fully online learning mode. It
is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students additional/extended support
so that you can seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and learning journey with little difficulty and
few barriers. In this regard we offer a specialised student support programme to students entering
Unisa for the first time. We refer to this programme as Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE)
Programme. The FYE is designed to provide you with prompt and helpful information about services
that the institution offers and how you can access information. The following FYE programmes are
currently offered:

• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need to navigate through your first year at
Unisa can be accessed using the following link: [Link]/FYE
• FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivated.
• FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics related
to your first-year studies (eg videos on how to submit assignments online).
• FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an e-mail
to fye@[Link]

7. OVERVIEW OF EUP1501

7.1 Purpose of the module

The module EUP1501: Ethical Information and Communication Technologies for Development
Solutions looks at the study of how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be
used ethically to find solutions in development areas. We believe that the knowledge, skills, and
values presented in this module will benefit you as a student at UNISA, in your career, and in your
personal life – it will enable you to participate as a computer literate member of your community.

As a student, you will be able to present critical arguments around ICTs for development, while
appreciating ethical dimensions within an information society in relation to Copyright and
Intellectual Property Rights, privacy, control, conduct, and expectations. In addition, students
should be able to demonstrate capabilities related to engaging with textual and numerical data to
present information in various formats, as well as their ability to maintain efficient, organised and
secure electronic working environments by managing digital files, systems, and applications
software.
The following table provides you with a quick overview of the module, the different Lessons, what
content will be discussed in each, and how the two e-textbooks will position the tasks into different
contexts - the one as an influencing member in our society where you will use Information
Communication Technologies in a variety of ethical ways in a developmental manner to solve
solutions, and the other, in a work-based scenario where you are required to show computer
competencies in a variety of situations (like using a word processor, a presentation or a
spreadsheet).

Centre where computing facilities are available. Please keep in mind that, if you want to
successfully complete this module, you need to work consistently through the module, using a
computer to learn or any internet-enabled device, exercise, and improve your knowledge, skills
and values!
7.2 Outcomes for the module

Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to show evidence of
mastering the following outcomes:
• Specific outcome 1: Present critical arguments around ICTs for development.
• Specific outcome 2: Appreciate ethical dimensions within an information society in relation
to privacy, rights, property, control, conduct, and expectations.
• Specific outcome 3: Demonstrate capabilities related to engaging with textual and
numerical data to present information in various formats.
• Specific outcome 4: Maintain efficient, organised, and secure electronic working

7.3 Signature Module

What is a Signature Module? Signature Modules especially developed at UNISA, are taught fully
online and have the support of Teaching Assistants to help the students in small groups.
EUP1501 is the Signature Module for the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology and
as such is meant to represent a particular discipline and distinct character values that the College
believes is relevant and important for their graduating students to study. However, the fact that this
module forms part of 99 different qualifications, including many students from other colleges, was
taken into account in the selection and presentation of content and learning activities offered in
this module.

This is a Unisa signature module, which is important for your qualification, as it orientates you to
societal issues. It is set on NQF level 5 - the first higher education level in your degree, diploma,
or certificate. This is a 12-credit module, which means that an average student will require about
121 hours to complete it. You will be exploring the discipline of Computer and Information
Sciences, and more specifically, the field of Data Entry and Microcomputer Applications. This
module is presented in English only as this is the predominant language in this field of study.

7.4 Teaching Assistants

EUP1501 is one of the largest modules being offered at UNISA: There were approx. 5000
students registered for the first semester of 2019 for this module. We know that especially when
there are so many students; it might feel like you get lost in this crowd. One of the advantages of
the Signature Modules is that they are designed so that you work in much smaller groups.

As students register for the Signature Module – EUP1501, you will be divided into small groups
of not more than 50 students each, with a Teaching Assistant (TA) – an ‘electronic’ tutor –
8
EUP1501/101/1/2022

allocated to facilitate the group. This means that the Teaching Assistant will help to guide you
through the module, provide you with assistance on your assignments and mark most of your
assignments.

Please take note that you will be grouped into a Teaching Assistant once we have
more than 300 students or more. ICT systems cannot group students to Teaching
Assistants until there are at least 320 students. Remember it is 320 students per
Teaching Assistant.

7.5 Prescribed books

Since this module is taught fully online, there are no traditional ‘paper’ prescribed textbooks.
There is, however, the following prescribed e-textbooks available online.

myITLab • The more practical part of the module related to Applications is

supported by this e-textbook from Pearson Education, a presentation per
chapter, as well as student videos and simulation exercises that mimic

7.6 What you need to do to successfully complete this module

You need to show evidence of mastering the outcomes by:

• Successfully submitting 7 (seven) assignments and
• Passing 1 (one) portfolio with a mark of =>50%.
• Acquiring knowledge, skills, and values related to these practical aspects by practicing on a
computer using the correct software; and

EUP1501/101/1/2022

10. ASSESSMENT
10.1 The purpose of Assessments in EUP1501

The general purpose of assessment in this module is to determine whether your current level of
knowledge and performance (competence) accurately reflects the specific outcomes that the
module expects of you as a student.
Such assessment will:

• enable you to compare your performance with the outcomes of the different lessons and the
module as a whole and

• enhance your learning in order to meet these outcomes.

There are several reasons why assessment is conducted in this module:
1. To monitor your individual performance and check progress to provide you with student
support
2. To determine your learning needs by determining what you as a student might already know
and can do regarding the module requirements
3. To assess you as you complete this module at the end of the semester

10.2 Specific assessment contexts

The contexts within which your assessment will take place provides for the following aspects:

• Your assessment will take place within an Open Distance eLearning (ODeL) context

• The specific discipline involved is Computing

• In terms of the learning programme in which the assessment takes place, the EUP1501
module currently forms part of around 99 different qualifications

• In terms of the number of students involved in assessment, each assessment will be

conducted on an individual basis, but will in some instances occur within the context of a small
group of students, for instance when you take part in discussions with your fellow students,
reply to their answers and consider their replies to your answers

• This module is offered at an undergraduate level

• In most cases, the number of assessors involved in your assessment is one - you will be
assessed by the Teaching Assistant to whom you have been assigned.

• Please be assured that all assessments in this module will be conducted in a fair, valid, and
confidential manner - no one will have access to your answers, but you, your Teaching
Assistant, and authorised module moderators.

10.3 General assignment numbers

Assignments are numbered consecutively in this module, starting from 01.

13
EUP1501/101/1/2022

10.4 Unique assignment numbers

Unique assignment numbers are available for each assignment – you can view this under the
heading ‘Assessment Plan’.
10.5 Due dates for assignments

Due dates for assignments are provided under the heading ‘Assessment Plan’. These dates will be
entered into the Calendar tool on myUnisa.
10.6 Assessment plan

The following is a breakdown of the formal assessment activities as they become due during
the semester

Assessment information about the 8

assignments will follow, which also
include the 8th assignment in the form
of portfolio.

Important: Because this is an online module, the assignments are not provided in this tutorial letter.
Instead, the assignments are provided in your learning material under the Lessons tool. You will see
them as you go through your learning material.
10.7 Calculation of your Year Mark (YM), Exam Mark EM) and Final Mark (FM)

• Your year mark which comprises of Assignment 01 to Assignment 07, contributes 80% to your
final mark
• Your exam mark (the portfolio which consists of Sections A, B, C, and D) contributes 20% to your
final mark
• Calculation of Final Mark (FM) = (80% x Year Mark) + (20% x Exam Mark)

Important: Please be aware of the subminimum rule (see Unisa Student Rules on myUnisa before
you login). It states that your year mark does not count if you receive less than 40% for your Portfolio
(final exam paper / summative assessment for this module). So even if you receive 100% for your
year mark, but 37% for your Portfolio, you might still fail the module because your year mark will not be
counted to the final mark. Please be careful of this!!!

10.8 Submission of assignments

As indicated in the table above, the submission of Assignments needs to take place in:
14
EUP1501/101/1/2022

• Assignments 2, 4, 5, and 6 completed and/or submitted for grading in myITLab.

Go to: [Link]
Use your student number as both Username and Password.

• Assignments 1, 3, and 7 on myUNISA, in the Discussions tool on your group website - you
should find a Forum for each Lesson, as well as a Topic for applicable Assignments
within each of these. DO NOT create your own forum or topic under Lesson forums and
topics. If you have any questions, write to your Teaching Assistant in the Questions and

10.10 Summative Assessment (Portfolio / Final Exam Paper/Non-venue based exam)

• The summative assessment for students registered for this module takes the form of a
portfolio examination. Please note that the portfolio serves as your summative assessment
therefore you get only 1(one) chance to submit it.

• Please access the myUNISA master site for the module (EUP1501-22-S1) on a regular basis
for updates and more information regarding your examination.
• For your Portfolio exam paper (Non-venue based exam) you need to complete Section A (found at
the end of Lesson 1), Section B (found at the end of Lesson 2), Section C (found at the end of
15
EUP1501/101/1/2022

Lesson 3) and Section D (found at the end of Lesson 4).

• Combine portfolio A, B, C & D into a PDF file and submit before the due date.
• Be careful for Unisa’s subminimum rule on exam marks. You will find Unisa’s Policies and Rule
document on myUnisa before you login.

11. OTHER ASSESSMENT METHODS

This module will be offered in an online format only and a variety of myUnisa tools will be used.
A number of assignments (as indicated previously) will be completed in and/or submitted using
myUNISA tools and Pearsons myITLab.
12. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The myStudy @ Unisa brochure contains an A-Z guide of the most relevant study information.
Please refer to this brochure for any questions you might have before you make use of any of the
contact details provided earlier in this letter.
Your Teaching Assistant may also make use of the FAQs tool on your myUNISA group site and/or
this tool could be available on the master site for the module.
Please find some answers to FAQs from the EUP1501 support team

• Can I get an extension for my assignment due to work or ill health?

The answer is, unfortunately, no. This module has thousands of students. To run the module
efficiently we work with processes and systems. Our processes and systems cannot allow late
assignments or allow us to grant extensions. If you are unable to submit your assessments then
please defer your studies to the next semester. Please see myUnisa (before you login) for more
information or contact the registrations department.

• Can I get to review my exam paper (Portfolio) or have it remarked?

The answer is, unfortunately no. This module is what we call a Signature module. There are
only six Signature Modules in Unisa. All Signature Modules have this rule that the final exam
paper (Portfolio) cannot be reviewed or remarked. This means that you are also not allowed to
ask why you failed the module. If of course, you received 0% for the portfolio then you may ask
why…our answer will either be; you were found copying, the portfolio submitted was corrupted
so we could not open it or the document you submitted was not the portfolio

• Why am I not grouped to a Teaching Assistant?

This could be because you registered late. We cannot always predict whether our student
numbers are going to increase, we can estimate. We have a pool of Teaching Assistants but to
activate them and group to you takes a little bit more time so please be patient…you will be
grouped. Whilst waiting to be grouped, you can commence with your learning provided in the
Lessons tool.

• Can I get a letter from my employer to grant me leave to complete my exam paper
(Portfolio)?
The answer is, unfortunately, no. You have the opportunity to complete your portfolio from early
on in your semester. You do not complete it in one day like a sit-down exam paper (which we
call a venue-based exam) so the answer is no.

• I have so many questions about Unisa, like how do I download Office 365, etc.?
16
EUP1501/101/1/2022

Most answers for general Unisa questions can be found on myUnisa, before you login in so
please go to myUnisa (before you login) and find your answers there before asking the Teaching
Assistant or our general enquiry desk.

• I receive many SMSs about EUP1501, people asking me to attend classes or guaranteeing
me a distinction for the module. Do I respond to these SMSs?
The answer is NO. Please do not respond to the SMSs and especially do not go for these
classes. These are criminals who are exploiting students.

• I have been enticed to copy the assignments and portfolio. What are the consequences?
The consequence is that your name will be referred to Unisa’s Disciplinary Committee. If found
guilty then you will be suspended and the suspension will be mentioned in your academic
record. You will find it difficult to find a job and be given a promotion. Please do not behave
unethically.

13. CONCLUSION

Do not hesitate to contact your Teaching Assistant on your myUNISA group site or the
EUP1501 Support Team if you are experiencing problems with the content of this tutorial letter
or any aspect of the module.

We hope that you have an interesting, challenging, and rewarding semester ahead of you and
trust that you will complete this module successfully.
Enjoy your studies!
