( Foreword )
This book provides learning materials to prepare for the N5 level of the Japanese-
Language ProficiencyTest (JLPT). lts primary focus is on reinforcing the knowledge
of language - characters, vocabulary and grammar - required at the N5 level. lt
allows you to prepare for the test by identifring the key points for each of these
three fields, and by reviewing them with exercises. The final tests recapitulate all
these points, along with elements of reading.
This book can also help you study or consolidate the foundations of elementary
Japanese. Mastering the elements included here will provide a stepping stone to
the next level.
Our hope is that this book will help you reach your own objectives.
( Features of this book and how to use it)
Comprehensive coverage of the N5 test
This book covers most of the questions about characters, vocabulary and
grammar that appear in the N5 test, and allows you to study specific points
efficiently. The key points for each day' s worth of study are summarized, so make
sure you understand them well before proceeding further.
Easy study planning
The three fields (characters, vocabulary and grammar) are designed to be
completed in I 5 days at a pace of several pages per day. Please refer to the study
plan section on page 6-9 to create your own schedule.
Step-by-step learning
Each day' s worth of study starts with key points followed by exercises. This
allows you to check your understanding of each point before you proceed further.
The exercises are modeled after the JLPT test to make you more familiar with the
actual question patterns. lf you get one of the answers wrong, don' t overlook it.
Go back to the explanation ofthe corresponding key point to consolidate your
learning.
Translations for smoother self-study
The vocabulary and example sentences are accompanied by English andVietnamese
translations to ensure an easier experience if you' re studying on your own.
Testing your skills
The final step is a series of three tests. They include questions about reading
comprehension, in addition to the characters, vocabulary and grammar covered
by this book, to evaluate your preparedness for the N5 test. You should aim for a
score of at least 35 out of 50 points.
