SYNOPSIS

Around The World in 80 Days is an adventure story and centres around an Englishman, Mr Phileas Fogg and his French servant, Passerpartout as they make a journey around the world. Mr Fogg enters into a wager 20,000 with a few gentlemen at the exclusive Reform Club that is possible to circumnavigate the globe and return to his starting point within eighty days. Mr Phileas Fogg is nothing if not methodical. He diligently plans the entire journey including rail time-tables and financial budgeting. Mr Fogg and his valet Passerpartout start the journey the very same day with minimal supplies and a carpet full of money. They start off from London to Paris, the Suez, the remote parts of India, Yokohama, America and finally back to London. At the same time there is in London a robbery 55,000 and Mr Fogg is to be the main suspect. Detective Fix follows him on his journey from the Suez and hopes to receive the warrant from London for him to arrest Mr Fogg on English territories. Some of the adventures are time consuming and result in Mr Fogg losing valuable time on his journey. After 81 days, the travelers enter London. Mr Fogg believes that he has lost the wager. However, all is well when Passerpartout saves the situation by correcting Mr Fogg that they are actually two days early because when thet travel eastward, he actually gains an additional day. This results in Mr Fogg winning the wager.

SETTING In this story the setting involves places around the world as Phileas Fogg covers his main destinations around the globe. Time : The novel is set in 19th century England after the 1870s. The invention of railroad travel and steam engines made travel within the time frame possible He events occurred within the time frame of the wager which is 80 days

Places : The journey starts from Saville Row, England where Phileas Fogg lived Many different places around the world that Fogg and his companion pass through London to Paris, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, New York and back to Liverpool, England and then London

PLOT Exposition : Mr Phileas Fogg was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club. He was there without fail every day spent his time reading the papers and playing whist. He breakfasted and dined at the club and went home at exactly midnight and straight to bed. He took Passerpartout on his personal valer. Some of the men at the club challenged Fogg to travel around the world in 80 days. A wager of twenty thousand pounds was set and Fogg calmly accepted the challenge. Conflict : Mr Fogg started his round the journey with passerpartout from Lndon on Wednesday 2nd October and was expected to return on Saturday, the 21st December , 1872, at a quarter before 9pm . they left with minimal personal effects and twenty thousand pounds in a carpet bag. At this time Fix, a detective was on the search for a bank robber and Fogg became the suspect. Fogg and Passerpartout travelled from London, through the Suez to India, Singapore, Japan, the United States and Landed in Liverpool. They traveled by steamers and trains and experienced a few unusual andventures and difficulties. Climax : When Fogg and Passerpartout together with Aouda reached Liverpool, Fix arrested Fogg and had him detained in the Custom House. He was released when the authorities announced the real thief had been caught three days ago. By then the expres train for London had left and Fogg managed to find another train. Unfortunately, due to forcd delays they reached London at ten minutes before nine. Having made the tour of the world, Fogg was lae by five minutes Resolution : Passerpartout dragged Fogg to the Reform Clubwhere he oresented himself three seconds before the agreed time. Phileas Fogg had won his wager and had made his journey around the world in 80 days and spent nineteen thousand pounds. H was thankful he had found a wife in Aouda

A young Frenchman with blue eyes and straight hair, a pleasant fac and strong, muscular body Worked as a travelling singer, a circue riider and a fireman Valet to ten other Englishmen before he works for Mr Fogg Possessed positive traits : honest, soft mannered and helpful A lively nature but quite nave and always curious about new experiences Honourable and very loyal towards his master Mr Fogg. Does not betray his master for all the gold in the world when he offered part of the 2,000 by Fix Alert and posseses lots of self confidence and is certain that Fogg did not lose the wager as they had completed the journey with two more days to go
