VIRTUALIZATION: -
In cloud computing, virtualization refers to preparing a virtual version of a server, a desktop, a storage
device, an operating system, or network resources.
This approach allows a single physical instance of an application or resource to be shared among
multiple organizations or customers.
It does by assigning a logical name to a physical storage and providing a pointer to that physical
resource when demanded.
It helps to separate the service from its physical delivery.
As a result of this technique, multiple operating systems and applications can be run on the same
machine and hardware at the same time.
The machine on which the virtual machine is built is called the Host Machine and the virtual machine is
known as the Guest Machine.
This virtual machine is managed by a software or firmware, which is known as hypervisor.
STRUCTURE: -
Layer 1: Physical Hardware (The Host)
o Located on the left.
o Represents the underlying physical resources: CPU, Memory (RAM), Network cards, and Storage.
o It acts as the single shared resource pool for the entire system.
Layer 2: The Hypervisor (The Manager)
o Located in the center.
o This is the Virtualization Layer. It is installed directly onto the physical hardware.
o Function: It abstracts the hardware and divides the physical resources. The branching arrows indicate it
distributing resources to multiple destinations.
Layer 3: Virtual Machines (The Guests)
o Located on the right.
o Represents isolated environments (VMs) created by the Hypervisor.
CHARACTERISTICS: -
(1) Resource Sharing: Virtualization allows its users to create different computing environments on one
host machine, which could be a single computer or a network of servers that are all connected to each
other. This allows user limit the number of servers that are active, use less power, and manage resources.
(2) Isolation: The self-contained VMs that come with virtualization software give guest users (a term that
includes not only people but also applications, operating systems, and devices) a separate online
environment. This separation keeps private information safe while allowing guests stay connected.
(3) Availability: Virtualization software offers various characteristics not available with physical servers
that boost uptime, availability, fault tolerance, and more, hence assisting users in avoiding downtime
that impedes user productivity and raises security risks.
(4) Aggregation: Virtualization allows multiple devices to share a single machine's resources, but it can
also be used to integrate multiple devices into a single, powerful host. Aggregation necessitates cluster
management software, which connects a number of identical computers or servers to form a unified
resource center.
(5) Reliability: Currently, virtualization technologies provide continuous uptime by automated load
balancing, which runs multiple servers on distinct host machines to prevent disruptions. Consequently,
hardware failures are a minor inconvenience. If downtime is a prime concern, you may need to invest in
backup hardware.
ADVANTAGES: -

DISADVANTAGES

HYPERVISORS
A hypervisor, also called a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), is the core software layer that enables
virtualization by creating and managing multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical machine. It
abstracts the underlying hardware and allocates virtualized CPU, memory, storage, and network resources
to each VM while ensuring isolation, security, and performance.
1. Definition and Role of a Hypervisor
A hypervisor is responsible for decoupling the operating system from the physical hardware by
presenting each VM with virtual hardware.
It controls and schedules VM operations, handles memory translation, manages I/O virtualization, and
enforces isolation among VMs.
Acts as the resource manager, ensuring each VM gets its allocated resources without affecting others.
2. Functions of a Hypervisor
a. CPU Virtualization
Creates virtual CPUs (vCPUs) for VMs.
Intercepts privileged instructions and uses hardware-assisted features (Intel VT-x / AMD-V).
b. Memory Virtualization
Maintains virtual-to-physical memory mappings through shadow page tables or extended page tables
(EPT/NPT).
Supports memory overcommitment, ballooning, swapping, and deduplication.
c. I/O Virtualization
Virtualizes storage controllers, disk interfaces, and network cards using emulation or para-virtualized
drivers.
d. VM Lifecycle Management
Creates, starts, stops, pauses, snapshots, migrates, and deletes VMs.
e. Isolation and Security
Prevents one VM from accessing the memory or data of another.
Protects the host and VMs from each other through hardware-enforced ring protections.

OPERATING SYSTEM VIRTUALIZATION
Operating system virtualization abstracts the OS layer so multiple isolated user-space environments can
run on a single kernel. The host kernel becomes the control plane, and each virtual environment (VE)
behaves like an independent system.
Instead of spinning full virtual machines, the mechanism provisions lightweight, containerized execution
spaces that share the host kernel while maintaining strict process-level isolation.
The host OS allocates namespaces, control groups (cgroups), and file-system isolation to carve out
independent runtime sandboxes for applications.
Each virtual environment gets its own process tree, network stack, user accounts, and filesystem view—
despite sharing the same underlying kernel. This cuts overhead drastically compared to full hardware
virtualization.

OS virtualization enables automated CI/CD pipelines, microservices, stateless deployments, and cloud-
native application delivery models.
Security isolation is enforced through kernel features like namespaces, SELinux/AppArmor, cgroups,
capabilities, and seccomp filters. These limit blast radius if a container is compromised.
Performance is near-native because there is no hypervisor translation layer—just userspace separation
using kernel primitives.
Cross-kernel portability is limited. Containers depend on the host kernel’s version and capabilities;
mismatched kernel features can break compatibility.
Ideal for deploying large-scale distributed applications, running ephemeral workloads, building
staging/test environments, and orchestrating services via Kubernetes or similar platforms.

STRUCTURE OF VIRTUALIZATION: -
Built as a layered architecture where physical hardware forms the base, providing CPU, memory,
storage, and I/O resources.
A hypervisor (Virtual Machine Monitor) sits above the hardware and is the core controller responsible
for abstracting, allocating, and isolating resources for virtual machines.
The hypervisor presents virtual hardware (vCPU, vRAM, vDisk, vNIC) to each VM, making every VM
believe it has its own dedicated machine.
On top of the virtual hardware, each VM runs its own Guest Operating System, fully isolated from
others.
Above the guest OS, applications run normally, unaware of the underlying virtualized environment.
A separate management layer provides tools to create, monitor, migrate, and manage VMs and
resources.
Storage and network layers integrate through virtual storage pools and virtual switches, completing the
operational structure.
VARIOUS IMPLEMENTATION LEVELS OF VIRTUALIZATION (types of virtualisations)
1. Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) Level Virtualization
Occurs at the boundary where programs interact with the CPU’s instruction set.
The virtualization layer emulates or translates instructions so that guest code can run on hardware with
a different ISA.
Used when guest architecture ≠ host architecture (e.g., running ARM code on x86).
Heavy translation overhead; slower but extremely flexible.

NETWORK VIRTUALIZATION
Network virtualization abstracts physical networking hardware—switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers
—into software-defined logical components. Instead of relying on fixed, hardware-bound topologies, the
network becomes a programmable resource layer managed through software.
The architecture decouples the control plane (decision-making logic) from the data plane (packet
forwarding), enabling centralized policy enforcement while maintaining distributed packet handling. This
separation is the core of SDN (Software-Defined Networking).
Virtual switches, routers, and interfaces run inside hypervisors or host machines. These logical devices
interconnect virtual machines, containers, and workloads without depending on the layout of physical
cabling.
Overlay networks (VXLAN, NVGRE, Geneve) encapsulate tenant traffic, enabling multiple isolated virtual
networks to coexist on the same physical backbone. This provides multi-tenancy, segmentation, and
zero-touch isolation across cloud environments.
Network virtualization provides micro-segmentation, allowing fine-grained security policies at the
VM/container level instead of relying solely on perimeter firewalls. Each workload operates within its
own isolated security zone.
Centralized controllers define policy, routing, ACLs, QoS, and segmentation rules. These controllers push
configurations to virtual switches automatically, eliminating manual switch-by-switch configuration.
This software-defined model enables rapid provisioning of network paths. When a new VM or container
spins up, corresponding network policies (IP assignment, VLAN/VXLAN, security groups) are deployed
instantly without hardware changes.
The system supports dynamic scaling. Logical networks can extend across racks, data centers, or cloud

VMs while preserving network identities.

TWO TYPES OF HARDWARE VIRTUALIZATION
1. Full Virtualization
Full virtualization creates a complete abstraction of the underlying physical hardware so each virtual
machine operates as if it owns an entire server. The hypervisor intercepts and emulates privileged CPU
instructions, exposing a fully virtualized hardware interface to every guest OS.
Guest operating systems run unmodified because the hypervisor mimics CPU, memory, I/O controllers,
and device subsystems with high fidelity. This provides maximum compatibility across OS distributions.
Hardware-assisted acceleration (Intel VT-x, AMD-V) offloads privileged instruction handling to the CPU,
significantly reducing the translation overhead that early software-only hypervisors struggled with.
Each VM receives virtual CPUs, virtual memory, virtual NICs, and fully emulated storage controllers,
enabling strong isolation between workloads. Failures or compromises in one VM do not bleed into
others.
Snapshot, cloning, and live-migration capabilities are native because the hypervisor owns the full
hardware abstraction stack, enabling seamless workload mobility across hosts.
Full virtualization is the backbone of modern enterprise data centers and IaaS platforms where
compatibility, isolation, and operational reliability are non-negotiable.
2. Para-Virtualization
Para-virtualization requires guest operating systems to be modified so they can communicate directly
with the hypervisor through hypercalls rather than executing privileged instructions blindly. This
