Science Grade 6 Course Outline Grade 6 students will explore ideas, theories, and concepts associated with the
four areas of Science: Flight, Space, Electricity, and Biodiversity. A. Course Overview: Cluster 1 Flight (September to November) Students will explore the properties of fluids to understand how flight can be achieved: This cluster will focus on: Forces of Flight Why hot air balloons rise Mechanism used by an aircraft Differences between a spacecraft and an aircraft Names of aviation pioneers and major developments in the history of aviation. Cluster 2 Space (December to February) Students will develop an understanding of the Earth in space. This cluster will focus on: Classifying organisms according to their kingdom Reasons why classification systems are used Steps in the formation of a fossil Famous Scientist connected with biodiversity Scientific Method. B. Essential Learnings Essential Learnings describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students are expected to demonstrate in the following areas: Demonstrates and communicates scientific knowledge and concepts Applies and communicates scientific inquiry and design process skills Recognizes and communicates relationships between science, technology, society, and environment.
Essential Learnings will be addressed through the specific learning outcomes as outlined by the provincial curriculum. C. Resources Pan Canadian Science Books Assorted handouts, books, and websites. D. Materials: 1 duotang with paper Pens, pencils, pencil crayons/ markers, scissors, and glue. E. Requirements: Students require 1 duotang, pens, pencils, pencil crayons/ markers, scissors, and glue. Students are responsible for completing all assigned work on time. Students are responsible for obtaining and completing any missed work and/ or arranging a time to take a missed test. F. Assessment: Students will be assessed according to their ability to demonstrate knowledge of the essential learnings. There are two main purposes in the assessment process: 1. Assessment for Learning: First, teachers gather information about
student learning that informs teaching and helps students learn more. The focus is on providing students with descriptive feedback to improve learning. Students are encouraged to reflect and assess their own learning (assessment as learning). 2. Assessment of Learning: Evaluation, on the other hand, is a process of reviewing the evidence and determining how well students have learned. Evidence is gathered through observations, conversations, and products or performances and is summarized to represent a students learning at a certain point in time.
