1. DESIGN CODE
Reinforced
Thermoset Plastic
ASME RTP-1-2011
Corrosion-Resistant
API STANDARD 650-2013 Equipment
Welded Tanks for Oil Storage

2. LOADS
Loads are defined as follows:

DL = Dead Load, The weight of the tank or tank component, including any corrosion allowance unless otherwise
Pi = Design Internal Pressure Shell, Shall not exceed 18 kPa (0.18 Bar).
Pe = Design External Pressure
Shall not be less than 0.25 kPa (1 in. of water) except that External Pressure (Pe) shall be considered as 0 kPa (0 in. of water)
for tanks with circulation vents meeting Annex H requirements.
Tank meet the requirements of this standard may be subjected to a partial vacuum of 0.25 kPa, without the need
to provide any additional supporting calculations.
Ht = Hydrostatic Test, The load due to filling the tank with water to the design liquid level.
Lr = Minimum Roof Live Load
1.0 kPa (20 lb/ft2) on the horizontal projected area of the roof. The minimum roof live load may alternatively be deter
mined in accordance with ASCE 7, but shall not be less than 0.72 kPa (15 psf).
F = Stored Liquid, The load due to filling the tank to the design liquid level (see 5.6.3.2) with liquid with the design specific
gravity specified by the Purchaser.
Fp = Pressure Combination Factor, the ratio of normal operating pressure to design pressure, with a minimum value of 0.4
Pt = Test Pressure, As required by F.4.4 or F.7.6.
W = Wind, The design wind speed (V) shall be the 3-sec gust design wind speed specified by the Purchaser, which shall be for a
3-sec gust based on a 2 % annual probability of being exceeded [50-year mean recurrence interval].
Fastest mile wind speed times 1.2 is approximately equal to 3-sec gust wind speed (V).
Design wind pressure (PWS and PWR) using design wind speed (V): The design wind pressure on shell (PWS)
shall be 0.86 kPa (V/190)2, ([18 lbf/ft2][V/120]2) on vertical projected areas of cylindrical surfaces. The design
wind uplift pressure on roof (PWR) shall be 1.44 kPa (V/190)2, ([30 lbf/ft2][V/120]2) (see item 2) on horizontal
projected areas of conical or doubly curved surfaces.
Pws = 0.86 x (V/190)2
Pwr = 1.44 x (V/190)2

Pfe = Internal floating roof design external pressure, 0.24 kPa minimum.
Sb = Snow Load, not present
Su = Unbalance Snow Load, not present
E = Seismic Load

Internal Floating Roof Loads:

Df = Dead load of internal floating roof, including the weight of the flotation compartments, seal and all other floating roof and
attached components.
Lf1 = Internal floating roof uniform live load, (0.6 kPa [12.5 lbf/ft2]) if no automatic drains are provided, (0.24 kPa [5 lbf/f2]) if-
automatic drains are provided).
Lf2 = Internal floating roof point load, Load of at least two men walking anywhere on the roof. One applied load of 2.2 kN [500 lbf]
over 0.1 m2 [1 ft2] applied anywhere on the roof addresses two men walking.

The strength ratio, which is the ratio of the stress capacity of a single layer relative to the stress generated by an applie
is calculated using the stresses from eqs. (13) through (15) and the following quadratic interaction equation:

Ex = Hoop Tensile Modulus

Es = Hoop Shear Modulus
X = eXTEx

Y = eYTEY
Yc = eYCEY
S = eXYQss
Fxx = 1/X.Xc
