LEARNING OBJECTIVES
M At the end of the lesson, most pupils will be able to spell food words correctly.
C At the end of the lesson, most pupils will be able to make a word snake or word sausage for other
pupils to identify food words.
1. Teacher plays ‘Chinese whisper’ with the pupils.
I. PRE-LESSON 2. Teacher whispers a few food words to pupils then they pass the information
to their teammates.
1. Teacher and pupils review spelling of food vocabulary by writing gapped
words on the board.
2. The focus is on the sounds rather than individual letters here, e.g. s t _ _ k.
3. Teacher then draw a word snake or word sausage on the board with the
names of food hidden inside it.
II. LESSON e.g. shapplejmchesekcheesehq (apple, cheese)
DEVELOPMENT 4. An alternative is to use words that lead into one another, e.g.
pizzapplegg(pizza, apple, egg)
5. Pupils read it, and tell each other the food words in it, and then tell teacher.
6. Teacher repeats with a few more sets to get pupils used to the structure of
the word sausage.

1. Teacher explains the next task to pupils.
2. Pupils need to work in pairs to create their own word snake/sausage puzzles.
3. Teacher shows them an example for them to model their work.
III. POST LESSON 4. Teacher and pupils create a set together.
5. Pupils create their own snake puzzle.
6. Once done, teacher invites random pupils to show their work to the class
