UNIT 1: PHARMACEUTICS
1.1 Introduction (3 hours)
History of the profession of Pharmacy in India in relation to Pharmacy education, industry, pharmacy
practice, and various professional associations Pharmacy as a career
Pharmacopoeia: Introduction to IP, BP, USP, NF. Salient features of Indian Pharmacopoeia
1.2 Solid dosage forms (4 hours)
Introduction and classification of different types of solid dosage forms
Tablets: definition, advantages/disadvantages and types – uncoated, coated and modified release tablets,
tablet additives, tests for tablets (thickness, hardness, friability, weight variation, content uniformity,
disintegration)
Capsules: definition, advantages/disadvantages and types – hard and soft gelatin capsules
1.3 Liquid dosage forms (4 hours)
Introduction and classification of different types of liquid dosage forms
Monophasic (internal): syrups, elixirs, and linctuses – definition, ingredients and preparation
Monophasic (external): lotions and liniments – definition, ingredients and preparation
Biphasic: suspensions and emulsions – definition, types, ingredients and preparation
1.4 Semisolid dosage forms (2 hours)
Introduction and classification of different types of semisolid dosage forms
Ointments and Creams – definition, types, ingredients and preparation
1.5 Sterile formulations (2 hours)
Parenteral products: definition, official classification of injections, vehicles for injections, Preservatives for
injections

UNIT 2: PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY


1.1 Introduction (3 hours)
Scope and objectives of pharmaceutical chemistry
Impurities in pharmaceuticals – source and effect of impurities in pharmaceutical substances, principle and
procedures of limit tests for chlorides, sulphates and iron.
1.2 Inorganic pharmaceuticals (2 hours)
Study of pharmaceutical formulations, marketed preparations and uses of:
i) Gastro-intestinal Agents: Antacids – Aluminium hydroxide gel, Acidifying agents – Dilute hydrochloric
acid, Cathartics – Magnesium sulphate
ii) Topical agents: Silver nitrate.

Introduction, Classification, chemical name, chemical structure, uses, marketed preparations of the
following:
1.3 Drugs Acting on Nervous System (4 hours)
i) CNS: Thiopental sodium, Diazepam, Phenytoin, Amitriptyline
ii) ANS: Dopamine, Pseudoephedrine, Propranolol, Neostigmine,
1.4 Drugs Acting on Cardiovascular System (3 hours)
Methyldopa, Nitroglycerine, Frusemide, Metformin, Aspirin
1.5 Anti-Infective Agents (3 hours)
Penicillin G, Norfloxacin, Isoniazid, Ketoconazole, Remdesivir

1. Handling of prescriptions with professional standards, reviewing prescriptions, checking for legal
compliance and completeness (minimum 5)
2. Preparation of dispensing labels and auxiliary labels for the prescribed medications (minimum 5)
3. Reviewing and reporting of FDA Drug Facts Labeling (minimum 5)
4. Preparation and evaluation of the following dosage forms as per monograph standards and
dispensing with appropriate packaging and labelling
i. Liquid oral: Simple syrup, Elixir, Aqueous Iodine solution
ii. Emulsion: Castor oil emulsion, Cod liver oil emulsion
iii. Suspension: Calamine lotion, Magnesium hydroxide mixture
iv. Ointment: Simple ointment base, Sulphur ointment
v. Lotion: Cetrimide lotion
5. Evaluation of marketed tablets and capsules
6. Limit test for chlorides, sulphates and iron.
