Codman Method

This document describes the Codman Method, a physiotherapy method developed by Ernest Codman in 1934 involving pendulum and circular arm exercises after shoulder injury or surgery to improve range of motion and relieve pain. The method involves exercises performed in a prone position and standing position with an emphasis on arm relaxation.

in a book 'A study of hospital efficiency'
INTRODUCTION

In 1934, Codman proposed a special type of

shoulder mobilization, recommended after the repair of
rotator cuff

Codman Exercises or Pendulum Exercises,

consists of carrying out a self-mobilization by
way of circular and pendulum movements with the
arm.
TEST PARAREALIZATION OF EXERCISE DOSAGE

It is usually used in the evaluation of a

possible rupture of the rotator cuff.

Procedures.
90º of shoulder abduction with medial rotation
Lower the arm to a neutral position

Test results:
- Positive: feels pain
- Negative: does not feel pain

EXERCISES

Simple and effective way to relieve pain and

restore the range of motion (ROM) of the
shoulder after injury, surgery, trauma.

The emphasis of the exercise is on keeping the shoulder and the

arm as relaxed as possible.
EXERCISES

They incorporate 3 distinct patterns of movements:

APPLICATION OF EXERCISES

Ventral decubitus

Lie on your abdomen close to the edge of the stretcher or

bed.

Leave the weak arm hanging at the edge of the

bed/bed as relaxed as possible.

Duration: 15-30 seconds each movement
