PATS System

The document describes the PATS security system for Ford vehicles starting from 1996. The system consists of a PATS control module, ignition keys with unique codes, a transmitter mounted in the key, and a powertrain control module. The PATS control module verifies that the key code is valid and allows the vehicle to operate; otherwise, the theft light flashes to indicate a failure. There are variations of the PATS system identified by letters that differ.

Genealogy of the PATS system:
PATS is a security system, introduced in Ford cars model 1996 and in
go ahead, There are many variations of PATS, in any case, the theory and
operation of all systems is similar, for specific information about
a specific car, look for the appropriate manual for your information.
BASIC OPERATION SYSTEM:
The system consists of:
PATS Control Module
It communicates with the PATS transmitter to verify the key code.
ignition through two signal wires (Tx and Rx).
Allows the use of the starter if the key is valid (if the starter has
switch).
Contact the PCM to allow the operation of the pump.
gasoline and injection through the communication system (network)
Ignition key(s) "SecuriLock"
-Contains electronics that do not use batteries and use a unique code, which is
programmed to the vehicle.
PATS Transmitter
It is mounted on the ignition switch body.
Energize the key electronics through a circular antenna.
Receives data from the PATS control module to request the key code.
through the Tx signal.
Receives the code and sends it to the PATS control module via the signal.
Prescription.
It can be replaced without any reprogramming.
Powertrain Control Module(Powertrain Control Module)
It communicates with the PATS Control Module to validate the key.
It allows the operation of the gasoline pump and injection if the code is
correct.
Anti-Theft LED Light
With the key closed:
Indicator flashes every two seconds to act as a warning that the
the security system is activated. (in some vehicles).

With the key open or in the on position:

Normal operation: indicator on for two or three seconds (depending
of the operating system), and then it shuts down (PATS system worked well).
System failure: Indicator turns on and quickly starts flashing or
keeps it on for a minute.
• J1850/SCP or J2284/CAN Vehicle communications (Network) and connector
data and starter relay. (in some vehicles)

Note: the functions of the PATS system Control Module may be

incorporated within several modules or be an individual system, for example:
that the instrument panel is part of the system, HEC (hybrid dashboard of
instruments) or VIC, (virtual Image Cluster), SCIL (Steering Column
Ignition/Lighting), ICM(Instrument ClusterModule), or PCM (Power Control
Module).
After being energized, the PATS Control Module requests the key from
ignition the code through the PATS transmitter (Tx).

The key transmits the key code to the PATS transmitter, which sends it to the
PATS Control Module (Rx).

The PATS Control Module compares the key code with the code
stored in its non-volatile memory.

The PATS Control Module transmits a signal to the PCM to enable or

disable the fuel pump and the injection. (and land the relay of
starter in some vehicles

The PATS Control Module flashes the 'Theft' system light to indicate the
system status.
The system keys contain a radio frequency transponder that is
critical for the operation of the PATS system, the approved keys are available
through Rotunda, Ilco, Strattec, Curtis, Huf and Valeo. Only the keys
from the 2000/2001 Taurus/Sable models, 2001 Windstar, 2001 Explorer Sport and
Sport Track, 2001 Ranger, 2001 Escape, and 2002 Explorer, are available from

Operation - System A
(PATS system is in an individual module)
The Theft indicator (PATS prove out) will stay on for two seconds.
with the engine running or in position, then it will turn off to indicate its
normal operation.
The Theft indicator will flash every two seconds when the key is in
off/acc position, this is in Contour/Mystique.
Only one key needs to be programmed in the PATS Control Module, to
allow the car to run.
A maximum of 16 keys can be programmed into this system.
The transmitter sends the key code signal through a twisted cable to the
PATS Control Module.
In each startup sequence, the PCM allows gasoline for one second.
Within that Second, the PATS Control Module determines the validity of
the key.
The PATS Control Module then sends a signal to the PCM via SCP
(Network Communication), which allows for the continuation of gasoline and Injection

Operation - System B
(PATS system is in an individual module)
The Theft indicator (PATS prove out) will remain on for three seconds.
with the engine on or in Run/Start position, it will then turn off to
indicate your normal operation.
The Theft indicator will flash every two seconds, with the ignition key in.
OFF/ACCY, in Mustang, there will be no indication from the PATS (if equipped)
with perimeter theft system, the indicator will light up and decrease its
intensity.
It will require two programmed keys in the PATS Control Module, to
allow the car to run.
A maximum of 8 keys can be programmed.
In each startup sequence, the PCM allows gasoline for one second.
Within that Second, the PATS Control Module determines the validity of
the key.
The PATS Control Module then sends a signal to the PCM via SCP.
