Chapter-1
Good morning/ good afternoon! My name is Johnny and I have been working in PT. Pindad
since 1991. So I have been working in PT. Pindad for 13 years. PT. Pindad located at Jend.
Gatot Subroto street 517 Bandung, have employer about 3000 people. PT. Pindad produces
many products, like gun, spare part of aerospace, calibration services, machining, casting and
forging, etc.
And you, Mr. Mc. Where do you work, and what’s your position in the company? Can you
explain me, what nationality are you?
These is the lesson one of my courses in Business English. We studied how to meet foreign
contacts and get to know them. My difficulties are how to speak and to use the grammatical
of English. And haw to listen, because pronunciations are difficult for me. My Friends have
been studying for 3 years in the courses, so that I have to suitable them. In 3 years ago I have
been in the replacement test for the courses, but my superior didn’t allow me to attend the
course. So I don’t know how to get it, because I can’t afford the cost in TBI courses. But on
June 13th, 2004 ago, my friend said me that many people whom joint in the course did not
pass the exam, so it should be 26 people. He said to me, do you ready for testing to change
the people? I said I am ready for it and soon I prepared myself for testing.
In the day, my friend informed me that my testing passed, so I am happy and said to my
friend thank you.
We started the course on July 21st, 2004. The First Teacher is Mrs. Emma, from Australia.
She is beautiful and he is 24 years old. She has married and has a son and a daughter. She has
started the lesson with first lesson “Meeting People”.
Mrs. Emma gave us lesson book “ Business objective”. It is very good book for me.
In the Clouse-1 we have to know two subjects:
1. Objective – to meet foreign contacts and get to know them
2. Tasks – to introduce "yourself" to other people, to describe jobs and responsibilities,
to find out about other people’s jobs, to ask questions about foreign companies and
the last is to read and write a personal profile.
The Summary of Lesson-1:
May I introduce you to ….? …. This is …
How do you do? How do you do?
Do you know …? …. This is ….
Hello, / Hi. Nice to meet you.
Good morning. My name is … I have an appointment to see …
I don’t think we’ve met. I’m …
Excuse me. Are you Mrs …

Mr. John Nelsons gave us the copy of pronunciations of Roman alphabet. It is very difficult
to say because it is the new lesson for me. He said that for easing to say it; you always repeat
it in your office. That is my problem. So I’ll try it so that I can do that.
The problem is how I plan my time to learn it, because in my job is very busy to do my job in
office. The other problem is difficult to seek a friend to learn together, to discus our lesson.
I think method, which I will be used, is to write and read and summary my lesson and
practice our lesson and I will do that myself.
My friend (he doesn’t joint in the course) said that don’t hesitate to practice your English,
such as reading, writing, speaking and listening. You always have to try and try again. Your
custom will change indirectly with your exercise. In the exercise you will find many trouble
in grammatical and pronunciations, and find out them through your lesson book or
dictionary. So you have to many learn it.
My motivation learns English is to help my children to learn it, because English is
international language. So we have to know it. My children have been course them for 3
years, I don’t see increase them in English, because in their course very short time for
meeting, and always learn grammatical not to practice it. I want the lesson of my children
have to learn daily English.
Tomorrow, July 29th, 2004 Mrs. E. Gunawan tried us to learn listening and conversation. We
are difficult to understand of the foreign conversation. The conversation is simple but the
conversation very fast to us.
On August 3rd, 2004 Mr. John Neelson learned us to say noun, adjective, verb words, like
bellow:
4
Adjective Noun Verb Noun
Civil Civility Civilize Civilization
personal personality personalize personalization
final finality finalize finalization
real reality realize realization
There are 97 words like that in English he said. He asked us for looking for all the words.
Pronunciation of words as follow:
thin mean thank this top send hand
/I/ / i: / // // /t/ // //
chip tree thought through tree ferry bat
cheap then that
He made a game to read a word, and other friend which asked have to see word in hand. The
purpose of game is to complete word in noun, verb and adjective form. If a word has
completed we seek other word and asked friend who has it. If a friend doesn’t have a word
the playing change and we take one word from desk. We rotate like that, so that all the word
taking from desk. The winner is who one more completed the words.
The game is very interesting, but little sentence we used in the conversation e.g. “do you
have civil?”. If I have the word I will be said, Yes, I have and if I don’t have it, I will be said,
no, I don’t have. That’s all.

New Method of English lesson.
9
It has been many days I don’t write my lesson course. I’m busy with my job at office. Our
teachers have changed method of lesson. We have to active in lesson, like conversation and
can explain our problem by direct conversation. Now, always our teacher gave us a cause and
we have to discuss it in English. Mr. John Neelson gave us a cause about “buyer and seller in
company” which we well known . We have to explain dialog in the company if there are
buyer and seller discuss “buy or sell” products. This following is formal format conversation
between seller and buyer in company in sell or buy products.
Seller Buyer
Good morning/ afternoon
Well come to ….
1. Let’s begin by introducing ourselves 2. Introduction a pleasure to here (pleased
(my name is Jhonny, This is my to be here).
colleague, his/her name is …)
3. In response to your recent equerry 4. Yes, We do. It is thy we would like to
regarding about our product the know (prices, Quality, delivery,
2764, do you have any question at warranty, service etc)
this point? (In light of your recent
equerry regarding about ….)
5. Of course, we understand in fact we
have prepare a price and service
package specifically for you. It is
contain in their document.
Negotiation
To practice our English Jhon Neelson made a simulation and taught us how to negotiate an
order. We were divided into two groups, one group as seller and another as buyer. In the
sentence of negotiation we should use many prepositional phrases as “prepositional
expressions” like below:
of benefit to as a basis for an this basis
limited to in favour of at some
the possibility of co-operate with at this point
opposed to in a position at this stage
stand on as far as present circumstances
preferable to up to a point
These sentences are fundamental sentences in making a negotiation in business.
Outlining your position
a I’d like to start by making our position absolutely clear. What we want is an agreement
that is of benefit to both our parties. Our basic position is that we want to co-operate
with your company in both production and distribution in worldwide market. This is
our starting point to be clearly understood and to be use as a basic for these
negotiations. Secondly, we are in favour of a licensing agreement rather than a joint
venture agreement. The policy of our company has always been to seek licensing
agreement and we see no reason to change our position at this point. Thirdly, we firmly
10
believe that any such agreement must be on a worldwide basis and not limited to a
particular geographical area. Finally, we want agreement that does not exclude the
possibility of the participation of third party at some future stage. This is our position
and we hope that we will be able to process on this basic.
b. Thank you for stating the position of your company so clearly. If I may, I’d like to
respond by outlining where we stand on these issue. Our stating point is also a desire
for mutual co-operation with your company in the area of production and distribution. I
think both side can agree on this point. At present, however, we are in a position to
accept that a licensing agreement is preferable to joint venture agreement. We do not
normally grant licences to product our products and we are strongly opposed to a joint
venture agreement in the present circumstances. To respond to your third point, what
we are looking for agreement at this stage is a limited agreement. By limited I mean
that we want to limit any agreement to the countries of the Pacific rim. We are not
convinced that a worldwide agreement would be of benefit of us this stage. As far as
your final point is concerned, we are not in favour of the involvement of third party in
this agreement and we do not see any reason for the inclusion of such a clause. This is
our current position.
Standing Your Ground
a We’ve considered your offer very carefully, but I’m afraid we’re unable to accept it.
We’re sticking to our original position.
b. I’m very sorry. This is really the bottom line. This is the cheapest offer I can make and
I simply can’t go any lower.
c. I’m afraid that we are no able to meet the condition that you have just outline. We are
prepared to be flexible moving but we really can not accept those conditions.
d. I’m sorry but we can’t accept that. Our position is clear and we have explained it to you
several time before. If you want these negotiation to continue, then there will have to be
some concession on your part.
e. We have made all concession we can make in this matter and we can go no further.
This is our final offer.
f. I’m sorry, but we’re not up to appoint on this one. We have already offered you the
cheapest deal possible an it’s impossible, I repeat impossible, for us to offer you any
more discount.
g. We have made our position clear to you on several occasions. We are not prepare to
accept a lower price. I’m very sorry but that’s the way it is.
h. I’m sorry, but this is very simple. The time clause is unacceptable to us an we are not
prepared to change our position on this.
i. Look, we can go this far but we can’t go any further. We have already made several
concessions, but we have now reached the limit.
j. I’m sorry, but this is our position. As far as I am concerned, this is nonnegotiable. Take
it or leave it.
