Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:110)

Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:110) – Verse-by-Verse

Explanation
Arabic (partial for reference):

English (easy translation):

“O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favor to you and to your mother. I strengthened you with the
Holy Spirit so that you spoke to people as a child and when grown. I taught you the Book, wisdom,
the Torah and the Gospel. You created a bird from clay, which came to life by My permission; you
healed the blind and lepers by My permission; you brought the dead to life by My permission. And I
restrained the Children of Israel from harming you when you showed them clear signs, but they
called it magic.”

Clause-by-Clause Explanation
1) “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favor to you and to
your mother.”
Explanation:

Allah honors Jesus (Isa, A.S.) and Maryam (Mary).

The reminder highlights that their lives were full of divine favor: miraculous birth, protection,
and guidance.

It emphasizes gratitude, humility, and recognition of Allah’s blessings.

Story context:
Maryam gave birth to Isa miraculously as a virgin. People questioned her, but Allah protected her
honor and blessed both mother and child.

2) “I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit.”

Explanation:

The Holy Spirit here refers to Angel Jibreel, who supported Isa throughout his life.

He provided courage, guidance, and divine inspiration.

Story context:
From childhood through his mission, Isa relied on spiritual support to teach and perform
miracles.

3) “So that you spoke to people in the cradle and when grown.”
Explanation:

As a baby, Isa spoke to defend his mother’s honor.

As an adult, he taught Allah’s message with wisdom and clarity.

Miracles in early life and adulthood show prophethood from birth and divine guidance.

Story context:
When questioned about Maryam, baby Isa said: “I am Allah’s servant; He has given me the Book
and made me a prophet.”
This proves he was chosen and guided by Allah.

4) “I taught you the Book and wisdom, the Torah and the
Gospel.”
Explanation:
Allah granted Isa knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the scriptures.

He was connected to earlier revelation (Torah) and taught his own (Gospel).

Story context:
Isa’s teachings combined moral guidance, laws, and wisdom for everyday life.

5) “You created from clay the figure of a bird, by My permission,

and it became a bird when you breathed into it.”
Explanation:

Isa performed the miracle of creating a living bird from clay.

Repeated emphasis on “by My permission” shows only Allah creates life; Isa was a messenger,
not divine.

Story context:
This miracle was meant to show the truth of his prophethood, not for personal gain.

6) “You healed the blind and the lepers, by My permission.”

Explanation:

Isa performed miraculous healings.

Again, the emphasis is that power comes from Allah.

Story context:
These miracles helped people in practical ways and demonstrated compassion, reinforcing
Allah’s message.
7) “You brought forth the dead, by My permission.”
Explanation:

Isa raised the dead to life, showing ultimate divine authority over life and death.

Again, it’s a reminder that all miracles are from Allah.

Story context:
This miracle symbolized hope and faith for believers and showed the power of Allah through His
messenger.

8) “I restrained the Children of Israel from harming you, though

you showed them clear signs, but some called it magic.”
Explanation:

Allah protected Isa from being killed or harmed.

Some rejected his miracles and accused him of sorcery.

This shows human stubbornness and Allah’s protection for His prophets.

Story context:
Despite miracles, some people disbelieved. Allah’s intervention ensured Isa’s mission continued
without harm.
