Class 10 - Light Chapter:

I. Multiple Choice Question

Q. The light ray which goes back to same medium after striking the body is called .....

Correct Answer: (d) Reflected light ray

II. Assertion and Reasoning

Q. Assertion(A): Light travels faster in glass than in air.
Reason(R): Glass is denser than air.

Correct Answer: (d) Assertion is false and Reason is true.

Explanation: Light travels slower in glass than in air because glass is denser.

III. Very Short Answer Type Questions

Q. Define the following:

 (i) Principal Axis:

The principal axis is an imaginary straight line that passes through the pole and the
centre of curvature of a spherical mirror.
 (ii) Focal Length:
Focal length is the distance between the pole and the focus of the mirror.

Q. Explain Total Internal Reflection in short:

When a light ray travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium and the angle of
incidence is greater than the critical angle, the light reflects entirely back into the denser
medium. This phenomenon is called Total Internal Reflection.

IV. Case Based Questions

Read the following and answer the questions:

The spherical mirror forms different types of images when the object is placed at different
locations. When the image is formed on screen, the image is real and when the image does
not form on screen, the image is virtual. When the two reflected rays meet actually, the
image is real and when they appear to meet, the image is virtual.

A concave mirror always forms a real and inverted image for different positions of the
object. But if the object is placed between the focus and pole, the image formed is virtual
and erect.
A convex mirror always forms a virtual, erect and diminished image. A concave mirror is
used as doctor’s head mirror to focus light on body parts like eyes, ears, nose etc., to be
examined because it can form erect and magnified image of the object. The convex mirror is
used as a rear view mirror in automobiles because it can form a small and erect image of an
object.

(i) What will be the position of an image, when an object is placed at the centre of curvature
of a concave mirror?
Answer: The image will be formed at the centre of curvature, real and inverted, and of
the same size as the object.
Or

(i) What will be the position of an image, when an object is placed at infinity of a concave
mirror?
Answer: The image will be formed at the focus, it will be highly diminished, real, and
inverted.

(ii) No matter how far you stand from a mirror, your image appears erect. What will be the
nature of an image?
Answer: The image is virtual and erect.

(iii) A child is standing in front of a magic mirror. She finds the image of her head bigger, the
middle portion of her body of the same size and that of the legs smaller. What is the order of
combinations for the magic mirror from the top?
Answer: Concave mirror (for head), Plane mirror (for middle), Convex mirror (for legs).

(iv) To get an image larger than the object, which mirror is it?
Answer: Concave mirror.
