CALCULUS 1 – DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

Instruction: Answer the following set of questions. Write your solutions eligibly and box the
final answer. Numbers 11 to 16 are worth 5 points each.

1. Evaluate the limit of a function (x 2-100)/(x-10) as x approaches 10.

2. Derive the y = x2x.
3. What is the third derivative of y = e3x?

11.A wire 4 meters long is cut into two pieces. One is bent into the shape of a square
and the other into the shape of a circle. What should the length of the circle be so
that the sum of the areas of the circle and the square is a minimum?
12.A water tank has the shape of an inverted circular cone with a height of 6m and a
base of 3m. Water is being poured into the tank at a rate of 2 cubic meter per
minute. Find the rate at which the water level is rising when the water is 4m deep.
13.Consider a cube of variable size. (The edge length is increasing.) Assume that the
volume of the cube is increasing at the rate of 10 cm 3/minute. How fast is the
surface area increasing when the edge length is 8 cm?
14.Find the absolute maximum and minimum values of f(x) = x 3 − 12x − 5 on the
interval [−4, 6].
15.Find the point on the curve x + y2 = 0 that is closest to the point (0, −3).
16.The top and bottom margins of a poster are each 6 cm, and the side margins are
each 4 cm. If the area of the printed material on the poster (that is, the area
between the margins) is fixed at 384 cm 2 , find the dimensions of the poster with
the smallest total area.
