Introduction
As per the reference mail, Dated 24-02-2022, Eluru Minicipal Corporation, this report is prepared
post examining the bunds of water storage tanks at Eluru and at Denduluru, that have been subjected to
cracking and evaluate possible remedial measures for the same.
Scope of the Work
Examine the site to understand the seriousness of cracks and their
propagation on the bunds of storage tanks.
Provide recommendations for further investigation for soil profiling to assess
the reason for crack development.
Inspection Information
Inspection structure Water storage tank bunds
Locations Eluru and Denduluru, Andhra Pradesh
Requested authority Eluru Municipal Corporation
Life of Tanks Eluru tank: 103 years Approximately
Denduluru tank: 11 years Approximately
Date of Inspection March 10, 2022
Observations
A detailed inspection has been carried out to identify the location of cracks and their
propagation of cracks in the water storage tanks. Two water storage tanks located at
Eluru and Denduluru, Andhra Pradesh, have been inspected, to further analyse the
functionality of the tanks and assess the remedial measures to be carried out at the site.
Eluru water storage tank: This tank located at Eluru, was constructed in the year
1919 and has been taking raw water from Krishna canal. However, this is currently
being used as surplus water storage tank, to be used in case of emergency. The
observations from the field inspection are mentioned below and the images are
provided (Fig.1) for support:
i. Mild to severe cracks have formed along the stretch of the bund of the tank.
ii. The depth of the cracks varied from few centimetres to almost one meter
deep by visual examination.
iii. The cracks formation has been observed towards the downstream side of the
bund.

Denduluru water storage tank: This tank located at Denduluru, has been
functional from the year 2011 and is taking raw water from Godavari canal. This
tank is the major source of supply of water to Eluru Municipal Corporation. The
observations from the field inspection are mentioned below and the images are
provided (Fig.2) for support:
Mild to severe cracks have formed along the entire perimeter of the bund of the
tank.
i. The depth of the cracks varied from few centimetres to almost one meter
deep by visual examination.
ii. While the cracks formation has been observed towards the upstream side of
the bund.
Recommended Future action:
Based on the site inspections following points are being suggested for future action:
a. A detailed soil profiling, testing and analysis is highly recommended to understand
the reason for crack initiation and propagation.
b. It is also suggested to provide the data on the design of the bunds and the material
that has been used for the same, to be provided for a thorough understanding of the
embankment built.
c. Therefore, it may be recommended to carry out extensive soil investigations,
before suggesting a remedial measure without proper knowledge on the problem
and the site.
