Part 1: Why Motivation Matters
Employee motivation is very important for Keells Supermarket because it directly affects the quality
of customer service, productivity, and sales. When workers are motivated, they work efficiently,
serve customers politely, and help keep the store organized. This leads to happy customers and
repeat purchases. Motivation also reduces staff turnover because employees feel loyal to the
company.
If employees are not motivated, they may work slowly, make more mistakes, or be rude to
customers. This can reduce sales and harm the store’s reputation. Lack of motivation can also
cause higher absenteeism and poor teamwork.
Part 2: Financial Methods of Motivation
1. Bonuses:
Keells can offer bonuses to employees who meet monthly sales targets or show excellent
performance. This motivates staff to work harder and provide better service because they know
their effort will be rewarded with extra pay.
2. Commission:
Cashiers or sales staff could receive a small commission for promoting certain products or
achieving sales goals. This encourages employees to increase sales and improve customer
satisfaction, as they directly benefit from their hard work.
Part 3: Non-Financial Methods of Motivation
1. Recognition and Rewards:
Managers can regularly praise hardworking employees or name an “Employee of the Month.”
Public recognition boosts confidence and makes workers feel valued, which motivates them to
continue performing well.
2. Training and Career Development:
Keells can provide training programs to help employees improve customer service or move into
supervisory roles. This makes employees feel the company cares about their growth, increasing
loyalty and motivation.
Part 4: Applying Motivation Theories (Optional – Higher Level)
Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Keells can motivate employees by fulfilling their different
needs:
• Physiological: Paying fair wages to meet basic needs.
• Safety: Providing job security and a safe working environment.
• Social: Encouraging teamwork and positive relationships among staff.
• Esteem: Recognizing good performance through awards and praise.
• Self-actualization: Offering opportunities for promotion and skill development.
By meeting these needs, Keells can create a motivated and committed workforce.
Part 5: Presentation
Your group can create a short PowerPoint or role-play showing:
• Motivated vs. unmotivated employees at Keells.
• How bonuses, recognition, and training help improve performance.
• A short explanation of how Maslow’s theory applies to the supermarket.
Keep the presentation around 5–7 minutes and make it creative with examples or short acting
