Information Sheet 4.1-1
Organic Concoctions and Extracts
Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. define Organic Concoctions and extracts; and
2. identify the uses and advantages of using Organic Concoctions and
Extracts.
Korean Natural Farming (KNF) is an approach to agriculture that
specializes in producing farm input to improve plant growth. It was
developed by Cho Han-Kyu in the 1960s. The fundamental principle is that
strengthening the biological aspects of the plant would eliminate the need
for chemical intervention. KNF can be applied to livestock management but
its products mostly address plant growth and soil fertility.
Organic concoctions and extracts are farm inputs heavily based on
the principles of Korean Natural Farming (KNF).
In this lesson, we will further discuss what organic concoctions and
extracts are? What do they do? How can you use them and what are the
advantages of using Organic concoctions and extracts in your farm?
Organic Concoctions and Extracts
e These are farm inputs derived from plants, microorganisms, and
animal materials processed to harness their beneficial properties.
e Theses are usually in liquid form
Organic Concoctions and Extracts Uses
* Fertilizers — most common use for organic concoction
- Applied by drenching (soil) or spraying (leaves, flowers or
fruit of plants.
* Growth Enhancer - used to help maintain vigor (physical strength
and good health) of plants
* Pesticide - used as natural pest repellant and treatment for Fungal
problems.
Flower inducer - used to induce flowering of the plants.
Soil Conditioner- also referred to as soil amendments, these are
products that are applied to control water erosion help improve soil
structure by increasing aeration, water holding capacity, and
nutrients.

Food supplement for animals -these are either added to animal feed
or fed directly to animals. These provide extra nutrients such as
vitamins and minerals.
Natural antibiotics for animals- can help immensely with keeping
open wounds free of infection, help fight bacterial infections. These
include garlic, onion, ginger, cabbage, and honey. These have
properties that harm or kill certain bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
Sanitizer for livestock and poultry houses- used to prevent the
spread of infectious germs, in the poultry farming sector, wherein,
good hygiene is becoming ever more important. A good hygiene
protocol ensures that bird flu (AI) - but also other infectious germs
such as Salmonella, ILT and Coryzo — can be kept at bay.
Advantages of Using Organic Concoctions and Extracts
Do not cause toxicity - synthetic fertilizers tend to release harmful
acids and toxic chemicals into the soil, which may harm the plants.
Since organic fertilizers are made from biodegradable matter, these
products do not release harmful chemicals or salts that are deadly to
plants.
Can be made from the raw materials in the farm- since these are
made from biodegradable raw materials everything that you need can
be found in your farm.
Safe to the farmers and the environment - You don't have to worry
about polluting the waters or the soil if you use organic fertilizers.
Organic fertilizers are not only biodegradable; these products are also
environmentally friendly, sustainable, and renewable and since it s
not toxic it is also safe for the farmers.
More profitable for farmers in the short and long term - Organic
continue to improve the soil long after the plants have taken the
nutrients they need. Therefore, the longer your soil is fed with organic
fertilizers, the better its composition and texture. So, while inorganic
fertilizer may be cheaper in the short term, it adds less to the soil in
the long term
Produce extremely good harvest- many people think and say that
organic food tastes extremely good.

Information Sheet 4.1- 2
Calibration of Measuring Instrument
Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Define what is calibration;
2. Explain why is it necessary;
3. List the steps in calibrating weighs scales; and
4. Identify how often a weighing scale must be calibrated.
Aside from knowing the needed tools and equipment in making
organic concoctions and extracts. We must also know how to calibrate the
measuring tool that we are going to use. It is to ensure that we are using the
right ratio of raw materials for the best result of our organic concoctions and
extracts.
In this lesson, you will know what is calibration and why it is
necessary, as well as the steps in calibrating the measuring tool used in
producing organic concoction and extracts which is Weighing Scale, and
how often should it be conducted.
What is calibration?
Calibration is a process in which the authority use known weights or
a reference weight to adjust weighing scale’s response, whether calibrating
mechanical or electronic scales. Under the procedure weighing instrument
must indicate an exact zero when it is not subjected to any loading.
Additionally, an error is calculated by obtaining a difference between
measured value and reference weight. As a result, the scale is considered as
fit to use when it produces output results with negligible error and within
specified tolerance limits.
Why calibration is necessary?
Calibration is necessary to achieve accurate results and ensures
consistency of readings. Subsequently, there are few other benefits of
calibration and they are as follows:
+ Ensures accuracy as well as precision
« Periodic calibration helps in identifying any critical damages or
permanent wear and tear

+ Helps you in avoiding legal implications related to weight inaccuracy
of the end product by producing exact output
+ Improves cost-effectiveness as there will be very few incidences of
waste or rework due to weight inaccuracy
How to calibrate weighing scale?
At the time of purchase, weighing scales are often pre-calibrated and is
known as factory calibration. However, scale’s accuracy might deteriorate
during its transit from the factory to your facility. Hence, you must calibrate
weighing instrument at your factory facility in order to eliminate the
possibility of inaccurate weight measurement.
Furthermore, the scale calibration procedure varies according to the type
of weighing scale you use. When calibrating weighing scales at your
commercial setup, follow this procedure,
1. Start with preparing the weighing instrument for calibration. Clean
it properly, remove any traces of oil or dirt. If you are using digital
weighing scales, turn them on few minutes before performing a
calibration procedure.
2. Modern scales come with calibration mode or calibration setting
button. Press the button and initiate the calibration mode.
3. Make sure your weighing instrument stands on firm footings; it
must not wobble or feel unbalanced.
4. Use calibration kit that or reference weight that is provided with
the weighing scale at the time of purchase. Take measurement
of reference weight and complete calibration cycle.
How often weighing scale must be calibrated?
Determining the frequency of calibration can be a challenging task for
enterprise owners. The calibration frequency depends upon the environment
and how often the weighing scale is used. If your weighing scale is
continuously subjected to loading and unloading for several shifts, then
such scale will require shorter calibration intervals. However, it is always
recommended by experts to use well-calibrated weighing scales to eliminate
risks associated with faulty readings.

Information Sheet 4.2-1
Types of Concoctions and it’s Uses/ Benefits.
Learning Objective:
After reading this Information Sheet, you must be able to:
1. Name the different types of concoctions and extracts, and
2. Identify their uses and dosage.
In the previous learning outcome, you already know the tools,
materials. Equipment and the raw materials needed in making concoctions
and extracts. Now, you are ready to learn the different types of concoctions
and extracts we can make out of them and it uses/benefits.
Types of Concoctions
1. Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ)
— is made from axillary buds and young fruits, fast growing
plants, young leaves of plants and grasses. Mixed with crude sugar or
molasses, the juiceis extracted and fermented after storing for a period of
time. The liquid is applied toplant’s leaves and growing points, soil around
the plant, compost heap and animal beddings to fortify microbial activities.
2. Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ)
- is made from sweet ripe fruits, fruit vegetables and root
crops. Thoroughly blended with crude sugar or molasses and stored for a
short period of time the fermented extract is applied to the plants to promote
flowering and fruit setting.
3. Kuhol / Fish Amino Acid (KAA/FAA)
- is made from spoiled fish and fish trash such asbones, head,
internal organs and skin with crude sugar; juice of the fish is extracted and
gets fermented after storing for 30-day period.
Is a liquid made from fish waste. FAA is of great value to plants and
microorganisms in their growth because it contains and abundance of
nutrients and various amino acids. Blue Back fishes have good proteins,
amino acids, and fatty acids.
4. Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN)
- is used in natural, also known as organic, farming to restrain the
growth of anaerobic bacteria, which usually thrives without the presence of
oxygen, that can cause diseases in plants. It can be used from vegetative
until fruiting (reproductive stages) of the plant

5. Natural Calcium Phosphate Micro Nutrients (CALPHOS)
- is a nutrient solution for plants just entering the flowering cycle.
There is an overlapping activity of Phosphorous and Potassium during
flowering. In natural farming, we apply calphos before the flower initiation to
support the eventual fruit.
6. Beneficial/ Indigenous Microorganism
- is becoming popular among farmers. This
Indigenous microorganism (IMO) has been successfully tried by government
agriculturists, academic researchers, non-profit organizations and farmers
alike. They have found that IMO is useful in removing bad odors from
animal wastes, hastening composting, and contributing to crops’ general
health
7. Lactic Acid Bacteria Serum (LABS)
-is now used for its ability to convert waste into organic matter and
basic materials. And they thrive and feed on the ammonia released in the
decomposition normally associated with the foul odor (removes foul odor).
