2 Marks Questions:
1. If 𝑇1 and 𝑇2 be statistics with expectations 𝐸(𝑇1 ) = 2𝜃1 + 3𝜃2 and𝐸(𝑇2 ) = 𝜃1 + 𝜃2 , find the unbiased
estimator of the parameter 𝜃2 .
2. From an unknown population a sample of size 5 is drawn whose variance is 13.2. Then find the unbiased
estimate of the population variance.
3. If 𝑇 is an unbiased estimator of 𝜃, show that √𝑇 is a biased estimator of √𝜃.
4. Let the observations 14, 19, 17, 20,25 constitute a random sample from an unknown population.
Estimate the mean and standard deviation of the population.
5. A random sample of size 10 was drawn from a population with an unknown mean and a variance of 44.1
sq. inch. If the observations are (in inches) 65, 71, 80, 76, 78, 82, 68, 72, 65 and 81, then obtain the 95%
confidence interval for the population mean.
6. A random sample of size 400 is taken from a large number of coins. The mean weight of the coins in the
sample is 28.57 gm and the S.D. is 1.25 gm. Find 95% confidence limits for population mean.
7. The following random sample, 38, 32, 39, 37, 27, 35, 28, 32, 30, 35 is drawn from a population. Obtain
the unbiased estimates of the population mean 𝜇 and population variance 𝜎 2 .
8. Given a random sample 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , … , 𝑥𝑛 from a population with mean 𝜇, show that the sample mean 𝑥̅ is an
unbiased estimator of 𝜇.

27. From a normal population with 𝜎 = 10, a sample of size 25 has mean 100. Construct 95% confidence
interval for population mean.

true proportion of students who like mathematics.
29. A machine produces bulbs with lifetime normally distributed, 𝜎 = 100 hrs. A sample of 49 bulbs has
mean 1200 hrs. Find the 95% confidence limits for population mean lifetime.
30. In a survey of 400 voters, 220 said they support a particular candidate. Construct a 95% confidence
interval for the proportion of voters supporting the candidate.

1. (a) Define a consistent estimator and give an example.
(b) Explain the terms 'unbiased estimator' and 'minimum variance estimator'.

2. Show that in random samples from a normal population with a known variance, the sample mean 𝑥̅ is
unbiased and consistent for estimation the population mean 𝜇.

3. Let 𝑇1 , 𝑇2 be statistics with expectations 𝐸(𝑇1 ) = 𝜃1 + 𝜃2 and 𝐸(𝑇2 ) = 𝜃1 − 𝜃2 . Find the unbiased
estimators of 𝜃1 , 𝜃2 .

4. If 𝑇1 , 𝑇2 be statistics with expectations 𝐸(𝑇1 ) = 2 𝜃1 + 3 𝜃2 and 𝐸(𝑇2 ) = 𝜃1 + 𝜃2 . Find the unbiased


estimators of the parameters 𝜃1 and 𝜃2 .

1. A random sample of 400 is taken from a large number of coins. The mean weight of the coins in the
sample is 28.57 gms and the s.d. is 1.25 gms. What are the limits which have a 95% chance of including
the mean weight of all the coins.

2. A random sample of 100 days shows an average daily sale of Rs 50 with a s.d. of Rs 10 in a particular
shop. Assuming a normal distribution, construct a 95% confidence interval for the expected sale per day.

3. In a random sample of size 100 taken from a population of size 1,000, the mean and S.D. of a sample
characteristic are found to be 4.8 and 1.1 respectively. Find the 95% confidence interval for population
mean.

4. A random sample of size 1000 selected from a large bulk of mass-produced machine parts contains 6%
defectives. What information can be inferred about the percentage of defective in the bulk? [C.U.,

5. A random sample of 500 pineapples was taken from a large consignment and 65 of them were found to
be bad. Show that the Standard Error of the proportion of bad ones in a sample of this size is 0.015 and
deduce that the percentage of bad pineapples in the consignment certainly lies between 8.5 and 17.5.

6. In a sample of 400 oranges from a large consignment, 40 fruits were considered defective. Estimate the
percentage of defective oranges in the whole consignment and assign limits within which the percentage
will probably lie.

7. The mean height obtained from a sample of size 100 taken randomly from a population is 64 inches. If
the standard deviation of the height distribution of the population is 3 inches, set up the probable limits
to the mean height of the population
