AMANDA!

-Robin Klein

Why do you think our parents

prevent us from doing
certain things?
CENTRAL IDEA/THEME
This poem describes several encounters between Amanda
and her mother, in which her mother always corrects her
behaviour, telling her to sit up straight and not to sulk, to
clean her room and not to have chocolates. In response,
Amanda withdraws into a world of fantasy and imagines
herself to be in other situations than her own – as a
mermaid, as an orphan and as the princess Rapunzel. The
poem mainly highlights the theme of childhood and the
expectations from a young woman. When we were the
children, we indulged in our fantasies but as soon as we
reached adolescence, we were expected to abandon such
practices and do as we are told.
Because Amanda is no longer a child, her mother expects
her to fulfill certain responsibilities.
