Individual Assignment (Optional)

Each word we use in our language has a meaning. A combination of words is a sentence. When we
string words together to form a sentence, the goal is for the complete statement to relay a specific
message.

1. What do you understand by lexical categories? Illustrate your answer with examples.
2. Discuss two functions of lexical categories in the analysis of sentence structure.
3. List ten prepositions and use each of them to make a sentence.
4. Replace the italicised constituent in the following sentences by an appropriate wh-word,
and give the wh-question that results from wh- and auxiliary fronting:
a) Michael can get very arrogant.
b) He got to London by hitch-hiking
c) Mungulume showed up in dark glasses.
d) The man at the front called out

5. Decide whether the following statements are true or false.


a) Only one noun in a noun phrase can function as its head. (……..)
