The document outlines a curriculum for a course on Building Services Design, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Over 8-10 weeks, learners will use AutoCAD and Revit to develop practical design skills, culminating in a final project that involves creating a complete MEP design for a building. Successful completion leads to certification and qualifications for various technical roles in the field.

CBC-Aligned Curriculum Structure: Fundamentals of Building Services

Design.

Course Code: CAI-BSD-01

Duration: 8–10 Weeks
Mode: Physical / Online / Hybrid
Software Tools: AutoCAD MEP, Autodesk Revit MEP
Outcome: Learners will acquire practical design skills to draft and model comprehensive
mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems for buildings, using both 2D and BIM tools.

General Learning Outcome (GLO):

To develop the capacity of learners to analyze, plan, and design integrated building service
systems that meet international standards and are represented effectively using AutoCAD and
Revit.

Module 1: Introduction to Building Services Engineering

 SLO 1.1: Understand the role and scope of MEP services
o Performance Criteria: Identify HVAC, plumbing, fire safety, and electrical
systems
o Assessment: Short quiz + concept sketching
 SLO 1.2: Interpret architectural and structural backgrounds
o Performance Criteria: Correct placement of services relative to building elements
o Assessment: Overlay service zones on structural plans

Module 2: Plumbing and Drainage Systems Design

 SLO 2.1: Manual sizing of supply and drainage networks
o Performance Criteria: Use flow rates, fixture units, pipe sizing charts
o Assessment: Plumbing riser diagram and fixture layout
 SLO 2.2: Revit modeling of plumbing systems
o Performance Criteria: Model piping, fittings, slopes, and pipe tagging
o Assessment: Complete plumbing plan in Revit MEP

Module 3: Electrical Systems Design

 SLO 3.1: Manual load calculations and panel scheduling
o Performance Criteria: Accurately size circuits and panels
o Assessment: Electrical schedule and SLD in AutoCAD
 SLO 3.2: Lighting and power layout in Revit
o Performance Criteria: Tag lighting fixtures, place switches, simulate circuits
o Assessment: Complete electrical model in Revit with legends

Module 4: Mechanical Ventilation and HVAC Design

 SLO 4.1: Manual sizing of ducts and ventilation routes
o Performance Criteria: Use air change rates and duct sizing charts
o Assessment: Duct layout sketch and calculation summary
 SLO 4.2: HVAC modeling in Revit MEP
o Performance Criteria: Insert air terminals, ducts, mechanical equipment
o Assessment: HVAC model view with system connections and sections

Module 5: Fire Safety and Alarm System Layouts

 SLO 5.1: Identify fire alarm zones and equipment
o Performance Criteria: Layout detectors, horns, and call points
o Assessment: Fire alarm and emergency layout sheet
 SLO 5.2: Fire protection modeling in Revit
o Performance Criteria: Place sprinklers, alarm devices, and emergency signage
o Assessment: Fire suppression model with fire riser detail

Module 6: Integrated Building Services Coordination

 SLO 6.1: Clash detection and coordination in Revit
o Performance Criteria: Resolve routing issues in 3D
o Assessment: Coordinated services view with clash resolution screenshots
 SLO 6.2: Sheet setup and documentation
o Performance Criteria: Assemble views, legends, schedules into sheets
o Assessment: Submission-ready drawing set

Final Project: Complete MEP Design and Modeling

Task: Develop and document full MEP design for a small residential/commercial building.

Deliverables:

 Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and fire protection drawings

 Coordinated Revit model
 AutoCAD schematics and panel schedules
 Full sheet set PDF + DWG + RVT files
Certification: Awarded after successful evaluation of final project and passing of module
assessments. Qualifies learners for MEP draughting, BIM technician roles, or CAD technician
pathways.
