Assignment – 1

CE-181502: Structural Design - I

Semester: 5th
Submission Date: 10/09/2025

1. Explain the term ‘limiting depth of neutral axis’ in RCC beam design. Derive its value for a
rectangular section using Fe415 grade steel and M20 concrete. Explain the role of the
strength of concrete, if any, on the limiting depth of neutral axis. Derive the expression for
‘limiting moment of resistance’ and ‘limiting percentage of reinforcement.’
2. A singly reinforced rectangular section is of breath 250 mm and depth 350 mm. The tension
steel consists of 3 nos. Fe415 steel of 16 mm dia bars and stirrups are of mild steel 8 mm
dia. Cover to steel is 25 mm. Assuming M20 grade of concrete, determine the ultimate
moment of resistance of the section.
3. A beam of breath 350 mm and depth of 400 mm has 4 nos 25 mm as tension steel with 50
mm cover to centre of steel. Assuming fck = 30 N/mm2 and fy = 415 N/mm2 check whether
the steel will reach yield when the strain in concrete reaches 0.0035.
4. A RC beam of rectangular section 230 mm wide and 400 mm deep is reinforced with 4 bars
of 12 mm diameter provided with a clear cover of 25 mm. Calculate the ultimate moment
of resistance of the section and the maximum uniformly distributed super-imposed load this
beam can carry if it is simply supported over a span of 3.5 m. The material used are
concrete grade M20 and steel grade Fe415.
5. A singly reinforced beam of effective span 7.5 m has to carry a characteristic live load of
15 kN/m and dead load of 20 kN/m. M20 grade concrete and Fe415 steel are used in the
construction. Determine the maximum and minimum effective depth of the beam that can
be permitted according to IS 456, assuming deflection requirements need not be fulfilled
and the breadth of the beam is 300 mm.
6. A rectangular beam simply supported at its ends carries a uniformly distributed
superimposed load of 25 kN/m over a simply supported span of 6 m. The width of beam is
300 mm. The characteristic strength of concrete is 20 N/mm2 and that of steel is 500 N/mm2.
Design smallest section of the beam.
7. A reinforced concrete beam is supported on two walls 250 mm thick, spaced at a clear
distance of 6 m. The beam carries a super-imposed load of 9.8 KN/m. design the beam
using M20 concrete and HYSD bars of Fe 415 grade.
8. A reinforced concrete beam is 250 x 500 mm. The tension steel consists of 5 nos of 25 mm
rods and the compression steel 5 nos 12 mm rods. 10 mm stirrups are used for shear
reinforcements and the clear cover is to be 25 mm. Determine the ultimate moment capacity
of the section. Assuming fy = 415 N/mm2 and fck = 20 N/mm2.
9. Design a rectangular reinforced concrete beam to resists service moments of 120 kNm
from dead loads and 110 kNm from live loads. The beam dimensions should be 250 x 625
mm and cover 25 mm with 10 mm stirrups. Use M15 concrete and Fe250 steel.
10. A rectangular RC beam 300 x 600 mm is provided with 4 nos of 25 mm bars as compression
steel. Determine the area of tension steel needed for the beam to attain its full moment
capacity. Calculate also corresponding ultimate moment of resistance. Use M20 grade of
concrete and Fe415 grade of steel. Effective cover is 50 mm.
11. Determine the moment of resistance of an isolated T beam with the following dimensions:
width of flange = 450 mm, width of web = 300 mm, depth of slab = 150 mm, effective depth
= 440 mm, area of tension steel = 2100 mm2. Assume Fe415 grade of steel and M25 grade
of concrete is used.
12. Determine the moment of resistance of the R.C. beam section shown in the Fig. 1. Assume
that fck = 30 N/mm2, fy = 415 N/mm2, and cover to centre of steel is 50 mm.

13. A floor system consists of a slab 100 mm thick cast integral on beams spaced at 2.5 m
centre and spanning 10 m. The beam part has a width 300 mm and total depth of 450 mm.
The floor is to be designed for a characteristics live load of 6.0 kN/m2 and a load of 1.0
kN/m2 for finishes, excluding the dead load of the floor system. Calculate the main steel
required, assuming fck = 20 N/mm2 and fy = 415 N/mm2.
14. An L beam has the flange width of 900 mm, with the thickness of slab 100 mm. The web
below is 250 x 500 mm. Determine the areas of steel required for it to carry a limiting
moment of 600 kNm. Use Fe415 grade of steel and M20 grade of concrete.
15. Determine the moment of resistance of an isolated T beam with the following data: width of
flange = 1000 mm, width of web = 200 mm, depth of slab = 100 mm, effective depth = 500
mm, tension steel 5 nos of 25 mm dia, compression steel 3 nos of 16 mm dia. Assume
Fe415 grade of steel and M20 grade of concrete is used.
