Automation Exercises

The document presents 8 programming exercises for PLCs. The first exercise involves programming an alarm for when the liquid level falls below a specified point in two out of three storage tanks. The second exercise controls the operation of an electric drill using switches. The third and fourth exercises automate the operation of a cistern and the opening of an access door, respectively.

Exercises for PLC programming

In a chemical processing plant, there are three storage tanks. Each tank
It has a sensor (A,B,C) that generates a high logic state when the liquid level falls below.
from a specified point.

Create a program in the PLC to activate an alarm when the liquid level falls below
from the specified point in two of the tanks. The attached figure presents the Boolean equation
that describes the functioning of this system.

Note: Solve using the FUP instruction editor (function diagram)

2. Create a program to control the operation of an electric drill. For the operation of this
drill has three switches and an indicator lamp, the following table describes the
function that each switch performs in the PLC program.

Function Switch Output activated

Int-1 Clockwise rotation of the motor Q0.0
Int-2 Counterclockwise rotation of motor Q0.1
Int-3 Engine shutdown

The program must consider that if two transfer orders are generated simultaneously, the engine
it must remain stopped. While the engine is working, the indicator light (Q0.3) must be on and
The circuit corresponding to the reverse rotation of the motor must also remain deactivated.

3. Design a program to automate the operation of a cistern

4. Design a program to automate the opening and closing of the access door to a
supermarket. The movement of the door is controlled by an electric motor that reverses its
direction of rotation (to open or close the door) according to the logical state of three sensors. Each
the sensor performs the following task.

a)Sensor 1 detects the door's opening limit

b) Sensor 2 detects the moment of the door closing
c) Sensor 3 indicates the presence of people close to the door

5. A public parking lot has the capacity to accommodate 20 cars, to carry out a
program to automate the operation of three lights that indicate the current occupancy
parking, the conditions are as follows.

a)If the number of free spaces is greater than or equal to 10, a green light should be activated.
b)If the number of free spaces is less than 10, a yellow light should be activated.
c) If the capacity is full, a red light must be activated.

6. Develop a program to count the number of bottles (finished product) that pass.
through a conveyor belt, so that when there is an accounting of 5 bottles
stop the conveyor belt for a time of 6 seconds. This time is used to carry out the
packaging of the 5 bottles, at the end of the 6 seconds the conveyor belt must start again
carrier.

7. An auditorium has 2 entrances or access doors, at each entrance there is installed a

device equipped with a sensor, which is used to count the number of people who
enter the auditorium, each sensor connects to the input of the same PLC. It is required to design a
PLC program that meets the following:

a)Count the number of people at each entry.

b)Determine the total number of people who entered the auditorium
c)Determine which of the three entrances had the highest number of people.
d)Obtain the average number of people who entered the auditorium through each door.

8. Design a program to automate the cooling system of a machine, this system

it consists of a fan and a pump that is responsible for injecting a cooling liquid into
through a coil. The operating conditions that must be programmed in the PLC are the
following:

a) If the machine's temperature is below 70ºC, a green light should be turned on.

b) If the temperature is greater than or equal to 70ºC, the green light must be turned off and activated accordingly.
simultaneously, a red lamp (alarm), the fan, and the cooling system pump.

c) When the cooling system manages to maintain the temperature equal to or less than 60ºC then
You must turn off the bomb and keep the fan running for 5 seconds. Once this is done
At the right time, the red light should be turned off and the green light should be turned on.
