Complete Verb Notes


For Students and Competitive Exams

1. Definition

A verb is a word that shows an action, occurrence, or state of being.


Examples: go, eat, write, is, am, are.

2. Main Types

1. Main (Lexical) Verbs - Show action or state. (run, eat)


2. Auxiliary (Helping) Verbs - Help main verbs form tenses. (be, have, do)
3. Linking Verbs - Connect subject with complement. (is, seem)
4. Transitive Verbs - Need object. (He reads a book.)
5. Intransitive Verbs - No object. (He sleeps.)

3. Forms of Verbs

4. Regular and Irregular

Regular Verbs: add -ed (play -> played)


Irregular Verbs: change completely (go -> went -> gone)

5. Finite and Non-Finite

Finite verbs change with tense and subject. (He plays)


Non-finite verbs do not change. (to play, playing, played)

6. Verb Tenses

Verbs express time (present, past, future).


Each tense has 4 forms:
- Simple: She writes.
- Continuous: She is writing.
- Perfect: She has written.
- Perfect Continuous: She has been writing.

7. Subject-Verb Agreement

1. Singular subject -> singular verb. (He plays)


2. Plural subject -> plural verb. (They play)
3. 'Each', 'Everyone' -> singular verb. (Everyone is ready.)

8. Phrasal Verbs

A verb + preposition/adverb that changes meaning.


Examples:
- give up = quit
- look after = take care of
- put off = postpone

9. Common Errors

1. He do his work. -> He does his work.


2. She is write. -> She is writing.
3. They was late. -> They were late.

10. Practice Exercises
