Caterpillar Updates
Compact Track and
Skid Steer Loaders
C aterpillar has added four Cat skid steer loaders and two
Cat compact track loaders to its next-generation up-

The upgrades follow on the heels of the Cat 255
and 265 CTL updates from last fall and complete
the process for this class of loader. They also usher in a new
nomenclature for the machines: skid steer model numbers
now end in “0,” and CTL model numbers in “5.”

gases and can clear away broken rock without stopping for
blasting intervals. A mole can advance about 76 m (250 ft)
a day, depending on the diameter of the tunnel and the type
of rock being bored.
Despite these advantages, moles have some drawbacks.
They are very costly, and the cutting head must be the
same diameter as that required for the tunnel. They are
useless in soft ground and mud, which collapse as soon as
the machine digs in, and, until recent years, when improved
cutting surfaces came into use, extremely hard rock quickly
wore out cutting discs.
In addition to blasting and boring machines, several
other methods are used to dig tunnels. The cut-and-cover
method involves digging a trench; building the
concrete floor, walls, and ceiling, or installing pre-cast tunnel
sections; and then refilling the trench over the tunnel.
This method is not usually chosen for building tunnels in
built-up areas in cities.

1. Planning Phase in a Structural Engineering Project
The planning phase involves a consideration of
the various requirements and factors that affect the
general layout and dimensions of the structure. This
leads to the choice of one or perhaps several alternative
types of structures that offer the best general solution.
The primary consideration is the function of the
structure, whether it is to enclose or house, to
convey, or to support in space. Many secondary
considerations are also involved, including as aesthetic,
sociological, legal, financial, economic, environmental,

are structural and constructional requirements and
limitations that also may affect the structural type
selected.

Rate of Strength
Gain of Concrete

S trength can be defined as ability to resist change.

One of the most valuable properties of the concrete
is its strength. Strength is most important parameter that
gives the picture of overall quality of concrete. Strength
of concrete usually directly related to cement paste.
Many factors influence the rate at which the strength of

the factors that influence the strength gain of concrete,
it is important to have concept of these terminologies:
Hardening is the process of growth of strength. This
is often confused with 'setting' but setting and hardening
are not the same.
Setting is the stiffening of the concrete after it has
