Slickline Wire Management Guideline

Section K – Slickline Wire Hints & Tips

The following should be used as a reminder during the preparation, planning and execution of
Slickline operations. The list of hints and tips should be regarded as a guideline only as conditions
vary from well to well there can be many other factors which can impact a Slickline operation. The
objective must be to always eliminate or reduce to the lowest possibility any cause for a wire failure
during operations.

 Is there enough wire on the drum for the operation

 Use the correct wire for the well conditions.
 Verify with the client in advance of mobilisation the expected well conditions,
confirm the concentrations (if present) of H2S, Co2, Chlorides and the well
temperatures and pressures
 API 9A (plough Steel / IPS wires) ONLY in sweet well conditions
 Stainless Steel or Alloy wires if the conditions are unknown or sour conditions are
predicted
 Regular torsion tests for API 9A wires, check the wire data sheet for the number
of required torsions (which vary for different wire sizes). Inspect the wire break, it
should be a clean break across the wire, if the break is ragged, cut off wire and
re-test
 Regular ductility / wrap tests for stainless steel /alloy wires. Rule of Thumb – a
minimum of 8 wraps. Inspect the wraps carefully after the test, if there is
evidence of cracks, marks or defects of any kind, cut off additional wire and
preform a new test
 If a wire test fails, continue cutting off and testing the wire until a good test is
achieved. Remember to note the amount of wire cut off and update the wire
record accordingly
 Always secure the end of the loose wire
 Check the OD of wire with Vernier callipers, make random dimensions checks
throughout the operation
 Visual checks must be made of the wire throughout the operation, during rigging
up, in the course of the operation and rigging down – does the wire make coils
when laid out on the deck
 Are the wire coils tight and approximately the diameter of the winch drum
 If the wire coils are bigger and appear ‘slack’ or are tighter and appear smaller
then cut off additional wire until better condition wire is visible
 Perform visual checks of the wire when making the rope socket, check for cracks,
flakes or damage
 The lower sheave / hay pulley angle must be checked, and the tension / angle
chart consulted if the angle of the wire exceeds 90deg
 Sheaves must be correct for the wire diameter, use the ratio 120 x wire OD
 Always lubricate the wire running in the well, check the oiler system is full of
lubricant prior to start running in the well
 Confirm the minimum breaking load (MBL) before the start of the operation
 Know the wire’s maximum allowed tension (MAT) before running in the well, as a
rule the MAT is set at 50% or 60% of MBL
 Call your supervisor before exceeding the MAT
 After completing a jarring cycle and the tool string has been recovered to surface,
lay down the tools, cut off a minimum of 50ft of wire and make a new rope socket
 Is there a jarring procedure, review and confirm the requirements
 Check and confirm running and pulling speeds
 Clean and oil the wire when pulling out of the well, use a wireline wiper to remove
well fluids

 Smooth spooling for wire sizes greater than 0.108”

 In dry gas well inject lubricant into the stuffing box injection port to lubricate the
wire as it passes through the stuffing box packing
 Cut off a minimum of 20ft of wire at the end of the operation
 Keep the wire record updated, importantly record accurately the wire cut off, the
number of jars, maximum tension pulled, the maximum depth run, well fluids
encountered and the wire tests performed
