Digital Signal Processing (BEC-303)
(Tutorial sheet-III for Unit-III)
1. State the need for employing window for designing FIR filter? What are the advantages
and disadvantages.
2. The most straight forward approach to filter design is to truncate the impulse response
of an ideal IIR filter. Why this is usually an undesirable approach?
3. Design a low pass FIR filter for the following specifications using rectangular window
function. Cut-off frequency = 500 Hz; Sampling frequency = 2000 Hz; Order of the filter =
10.
4. Determine the filter coefficients h(n) obtained by sampling
{ }

H d ( e )= e ; 0 ≤ mod ώ ≤

0; π /2 ≤ modω≤ π
For M=7. Use frequency Sampling method. (S. Salivanan Page no. 443)
5. Design a low pass filter using Kaiser window satisfying the
specifications given filter:
Passband cutoff frequency Fp = 150 Hz
Stopband cutoff frequency Fs = 250 Hz
Sampling frequency Ft = 1000 Hz
Passband attenuation Ap = 0.1dB
Stopband attenuation As = 40 dB.
6. A FIR filter has following symmetry in impulse response: h(n)=h(M-1-n) for M even.
Derive its frequency response. And show that it has linear phase.
7. Design a discrete time low pass filter with following specifications.
0.99≤|H(ejω)|≤1.01 |ω|≤0.4π
|H(ejω|≤0.01 0.6π≤|ω|≤π
Use Keiser window for design.
8. Explain the Gibbs phenomenon. Find the response of rectangular window and explain it.
9. What is Hamming Window Function? Obtain its frequency domain characteristics.
10. Define the Recursive and Non-Recursive systems.
11. Enlist the Condition for Linear Phase FIR digital filter with 5 Number of samples.
12. A low Pass filter is to be designed with the following specifications:
H d ( e jω ) =e−2 jω −π / 4 ≤ π / 4
0 , otherwise
Using Rectangular Window method., find filter coefficients and frequency spectrum of
the designated filter.
13. Design a filter with
{ }
−3 jω π π
e ,− ≤ ω ≤
H d ( e )=
jω

0 , π /4 ≤ω ≤ π
using Hamming window with M =7.
14. State the need for employing window for designing FIR filter?
15. Explain any two FIR filter realization methods with suitable example.
16. Using a rectangular window, design a low-pass filter with passband gain of unity, cut-off
frequency of 1 kHz and working at a sampling frequency of 5 kHz. The length of the
impulse response should be 7. (S. Salivanan Page no. 465)
17. Design a bandbass filter to pass frequencies in the range 1–2 rad using Hanning window
M = 5. (S. Salivanan page no 464)
