INTERVIEW
INDUSTRIAL PERSON
ROSHNI NADAR
MALHOTRA
Roshni Nadar Malhotra is the Chairperson of HCL Technologies and
the first woman to lead a listed IT company in India. Born in 1982, she
is the daughter of Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL. She studied
Communication and Media Studies at Northwestern University,
USA, and completed her MBA from Kellogg School of Management.
Before joining HCL, she worked in the media industry and later took
leadership roles in HCL Corporation, becoming Chairperson in 2020.
Apart from business, Roshni is a dedicated philanthropist. Through
the Shiv Nadar Foundation, she supports education and social
development projects, and she founded The Habitats Trust to
protect India’s wildlife. Her leadership blends technology, ethics,
and compassion, making her a true inspiration for young
entrepreneurs and women in business.
QUESTIONNAIRE
Interviewer: What inspired you to join HCL Technologies after your
education abroad?
Roshni Malhotra: My inspiration came from my father’s vision. I
saw how HCL was transforming the technology landscape and
wanted to build upon that legacy while bringing in a global, long-
term perspective.
Interviewer: How did your experience at Kellogg Business School
influence your leadership style?
Roshni Malhotra: Kellogg emphasized collaboration and empathy
as core aspects of leadership. That shaped my approach to leading
with purpose and values rather than power or position.
Interviewer: How do you see HCL’s role in the evolving global tech
landscape?
Roshni Malhotra: HCL plays a crucial role as a digital
transformation partner for global enterprises. We are moving
beyond being just a service provider to becoming a strategic
technology enabler.
Interviewer: How important is sustainability in HCL’s vision?
Roshni Malhotra: Sustainability is embedded in our business
model. We focus on environmental responsibility, ethical
governance, and social impact through education and
empowerment initiatives.
Interviewer: How do you balance business responsibilities with
your philanthropic ventures?
Roshni Malhotra: Balance comes through purpose alignment. Both
my business and philanthropic efforts aim to create long-term
impact—one through economic empowerment and the other
through education.
Interviewer: What’s one mistake that taught you more than
any success ever could?
Roshni Malhotra: I learned that true leadership is about trust and
delegation. Surrounding yourself with capable people and giving
them space to grow creates much better outcomes than trying to
control everything. That realization completely changed the way I
lead today.
Interviewer: How do you balance empathy with efficiency
when leading a large organisation?
Roshni Malhotra: Empathy and efficiency are not opposites they
actually strengthen each other. At HCL, I’ve learned that listening
carefully, even when time is limited, helps me make decisions that
are both humane and practical. It’s all about clear communication
and respect.
Interviewer: What’s one misconception people have about women
in leadership that you’d like to correct?
Roshni Malhotra: Many people still believe that women lead with
emotion instead of logic, but I think empathy and logic go hand in
hand. Women leaders often bring collaboration, resilience, and
long-term thinking to the table, which are exactly what modern
organisations need.
Interviewer: What kind of legacy would you like to leave for the
next generation of women leaders?
Roshni Malhotra: I hope my legacy shows that it’s possible to lead
with purpose, grace, and conviction. I want future women leaders
to know they don’t have to imitate anyone they can lead
authentically, on their own terms. If I can inspire even a few young
women to believe in themselves, I would consider that my greatest
achievement.
Interviewer: If you could give one message to students like us, what
would it be?
Roshni Malhotra: Stay curious, stay grounded, and never stop
learning. Success isn’t just about achievement ,it’s about creating
value and making a difference with what you know.
Interviewer: How do you define leadership in today’s digital era?
Roshni Malhotra: Leadership today is about adaptability and
awareness. With technology evolving so fast, leaders must stay
grounded in values while remaining open to change. For me,
leadership is not about control but about enabling people to
perform their best.
Interviewer: What inspires your decision-making process?
Roshni Malhotra: I’m inspired by long-term impact rather than
short-term gains. My decisions are guided by clarity of purpose ,
whether it benefits people, the organisation , and society in the
long run. Intuition also plays a key role along with data.
Interviewer: How do you manage stress or pressure in your
professional life?
Roshni Malhotra: I focus on balance, spending time with family,
reading, and nature helps me reset. I also remind myself that not
every challenge needs an immediate solution. Clarity often comes
when the mind is calm.
Interviewer: What role does education play in shaping good
leaders?
Roshni Malhotra: Education gives you knowledge, but great
leadership comes from applying it with empathy and purpose.
Through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, I’ve seen how education can
empower individuals to think independently and lead with
responsibility.
Interviewer: How do you see the role of technology in building a
sustainable future?
Roshni Malhotra: Technology can be a force for good if used
responsibly. At HCL, we focus on digital innovation that supports
sustainability from smart solutions to energy-efficient systems.
Technology must solve problems, not create them.
Interviewer: How do you define success in a world that measures
everything by numbers?
Roshni Malhotra: For me, success goes far beyond numbers or
financial results. True success is when your work creates value for
others - when it uplifts communities, empowers people, and leaves
a lasting positive impact. Numbers may show progress, but
purpose gives it meaning.
Interviewer: How important is creativity in the corporate world?
Roshni Malhotra: Creativity fuels innovation. It allows teams to
look beyond existing systems and find better ways to work.
Whether in business or philanthropy, I believe creativity keeps an
organization alive and forward-thinking.
Interviewer: Who has been your biggest role model or influence?
Roshni Malhotra: My father, Shiv Nadar, has been my greatest
influence. Watching him build HCL with integrity and vision taught
me the importance of humility, perseverance, and giving back to
society. His values continue to guide me every day.
Interviewer: What do you consider your proudest achievement so
far?
Roshni Malhotra: Becoming the Chairperson of HCL Technologies
was an honor, but I’m most proud of our foundation’s impact on
education and rural transformation. Seeing young students from
remote areas achieve their dreams is truly fulfilling.
Interviewer: What advice would you give to students aspiring to
become future leaders?
Roshni Malhotra: Stay curious, stay grounded, and never stop
learning. Leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about responsibility.
Always believe that small, consistent efforts can create big change.
Interviewer: How do you envision the future of HCL Technologies
in the next decade?
Roshni Malhotra: I see HCL becoming even more global, diverse,
and innovation-driven. Our focus will remain on digital
transformation and human-centric technology that improves lives
while creating value for all stakeholders.
Interviewer: Mrs. Roshni, it’s truly been an honor speaking with
you today. Listening to your journey, your thoughts on leadership,
and your perspective on empathy and innovation has been deeply
inspiring. Your words have given me a fresh way of looking at
success ,not just as achievement, but as purpose and impact.
We genuinely admire how you balance professionalism with
compassion, and how you continue to lead with such clarity and
grace. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable time and
insights with us. This conversation has not only motivated us, but
also reminded us that true leadership begins with self-belief and a
desire to make a difference.
