IISER Tirupati August Session 2025

MTH111: Calculus
Tutorial-3 (October 11, 2025)

Remark: Only the problems with an asterisk * will be discussed in the tutorial.

1*. Draw the graphs of the function f : R → R in the following cases.

(A) f (x) = x + |x|
(B) f (x) = x − |x|
(C) f (x) = x + [x]

2*. Determine whether each of the following statements is true or false. In each
case, give a reason for your decision.
(A) x < 5 implies |x| < 5
(B) |x − 5| < 2 implies 3 < x < 7
(C) |1 + 3x| ≤ 1 implies x ≥ − 23
(D) There is no real x for which |x − 1| = |x − 2|

3*. Draw the set {x ∈ R : |x2 − 4| > 1} on the number line.

4*. For real numbers a1 , · · · , an prove that:

(A) |a1 + · · · + an | ≤ |a1 | + · · · + |an |
(B) |a1 + · · · + an | ≥ |a1 | − · · · − |an |

5. When does equality hold in the triangle inequality |a + b| ≤ |a| + |b|?

6. Prove that | sin2 x − sin2 y| ≤ | sin x−y

| for all x, y ∈ R.

7*. For each n ∈ N, let xn = (1 + n1 )n . Prove that there exists a real number M
(independent of n) such that

|xn | ≤ M f or all n ∈ N.

8. Let P (x) = xn + a1 xn−1 + · · · + an be a polynomial function of degree n. Show

that there exists a (fixed) real number M > 0 such that

|P (x)| ≤ M |x|n f or all x ∈ R.
