12 HUMSS - CONFIDENCE
CHAPTER 1:
THE PROBLEM AND
ITS BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Fischer's (1982) studies showed that friends meet our material
needs. Friends provide various kinds of help and support. In line with this, it has
been mentioned in a research about peers that adolescents working together
took part with learning faster and completed tasks better than they did working
alone (Silva, K., Shulman, E., Chein, J., & Steinberg, L., 2019).
Conversely, students with no friends "receive lower grades and are less
academically engaged compared to those with even just one friend," reported
by Jaana Juvonen, a psychology professor at UCLA, and her colleagues in a
2019 issue of the joumal entitled "Educational Psychologist". Given these benefits
of friendship, it is little to no wonder that Aristotle proclaimed: "Without friends
no one would choose to live" (Aristotle Nicomachean Ethics, Book VIII, 1. 1931).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

WRIGHT 1978

According to the Theory of Paul H. Wright (1978). “Toward a Theory

of Friendship Based on a Conception of Self”. The present theory of
friendship is based on a conception of self that regards a central
motive to be the person's concern for the well-being and worth of the
entity (s) he identifies as self. This concern manifests itself in
tendencies to affirm one's sense of individuality, affirm one's more
important self-attributes, evaluate one's self positively, and change
toward positive self-growth.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This figure examines the relationship

between friendship quality and academic
performance by categorizing friendship
quality into good and poor quality reflecting
both the positive and negative aspects of
friendship.

CHAPTER 2 :
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE AND STUDIES
FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Alotaibi et al., (2023). Discussed

"The Benefits Of Friendships In Academic Settings:
A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis,".
Discusses how friendships improve study habits,
motivation, and overall academic performance
through friendship support.
FOREIGN STUDIES

According to Palacios and Berger (2022).

entitled “Friendship influence on Academic Performance
among early adolescents: The role of social status”, their
study found that friendship quality and peer dynamics
significantly affect students’ academic performance,
showing that supportive friendships boost motivation and
learning, while negative ones can hinder achievement.
LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Paroginog, Dusal-Alpuerto,

and Pilongo (2017), social skills have a
significant link to academic performance.
Their study found that students with strong
social and study skills perform better, while
those lacking them struggle with attention,
preparation, and peer relationships.
LOCAL STUDIES

According to Moneva and Me (2020), their study “Number

of Friends in School and the Level of Self-Confidence of
the Students” found no significant relationship between
the number of friends and students’ self-confidence.
Conducted at Jagobiao National High School, the study
highlighted that friendship remains an important part of
student life, but the quantity of friends does not directly
influence self-confidence levels.
CHAPTER 3:
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN

This study apply a Descriptive Research Design to clearly

describe how friendship quality is related to the academic
performance of Senior High School students.

This method allows the researchers to gather actual information

from the respondents and present their real experiences and
behaviors without controlling any variables.
POPULATION & SAMPLING

Maranatha Christian Academy has 99 Senior

High School students enrolled for A.Y 2025–2026.
Using Cochran’s formula,
A probability sample size of 76 was determined.
A Simple Random Sampling method ensures
each student has an equal, unbiased chance of
selection.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTATION

The primary tool suitable for quantitative research

is a Survey Questionnaire (via online google
form) with Cross-sectional ( one point in time)
and Closed-ended (4 point likert scale) questions
for effective data collection.
