Course Purpose

To equip the learner with sufficient knowledge on database design, data storage and
manipulation.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course unit, the learner should be able to:

i) Explain the principles underlying database systems.


ii) Distinguish the database approach from traditional file processing applications.
iii) Define relational database models
iv) Define a database and basic storage structure
v) Use the data definition and manipulation languages.

Teaching Methodology
Lecture method, Group activities, Class discussions, Demonstrations and illustrations,
Audio/Tele/video conferencing, and E-learning activities.
Instructional Materials
The recommended instructional materials for this course include the following:
Overhead projector, Handouts, Charts, Text books, Chalk/white board marker, supervised
laboratory exercises, Networking toolkit, Network and internetworking devices, video,
multimedia, Computers-Desktop/Laptops/ tablets and e-journals
Course Assessment

30% Continuous Assessment (CATS 20%, Assignment 10%) 70% End of Semester
