Grade 9 Integrated Science - Strand 3:
Force and Energy
Sub Strand 3.1: Curved Mirrors - Lesson Notes
Lesson 1: Introduction to Curved Mirrors
Objective: Identify and describe types of curved mirrors.
Curved mirrors are mirrors with surfaces that are curved inward or outward.
Types:
- Concave mirrors: Surface curves inward like a cave.
- Convex mirrors: Surface curves outward like the back of a spoon.
- Parabolic mirrors (special type of concave): Used to focus light.
Key Terminology: Pole, Centre of Curvature (C), Principal Axis, Radius of Curvature,
Principal Focus (F)
Applications:
- Concave: Dentist mirrors, shaving mirrors, headlights
- Convex: Side mirrors on vehicles, hallway surveillance
Lesson 2: Terminology and Parts of a Curved Mirror
Objective: Label and explain key parts of a curved mirror.
Principal Axis – Line passing through the pole and centre of curvature
Pole (P) – Midpoint of the mirror's surface
Centre of Curvature (C) – Centre of the sphere the mirror is a part of
Focus (F) – Point where parallel rays meet after reflection
Include labelled diagrams of concave and convex mirrors
Lesson 3: Ray Diagrams – Concave Mirror (Object beyond C)
Objective: Draw ray diagrams for concave mirrors (object beyond C).
Rules for drawing rays:
1. Ray parallel to principal axis reflects through F.
2. Ray through C reflects back on itself.
Image formed: Real, inverted, smaller
Lesson 4: Ray Diagrams – Concave Mirror (Object between F and C)
Objective: Draw and interpret images for objects placed between F and C.
Image formed: Real, inverted, larger
Lesson 5: Ray Diagrams – Concave Mirror (Object at F and between F & P)
Objective: Explore special cases for object at F and between F & P.
At F: Image at infinity
Between F & P: Image is virtual, upright, magnified
Lesson 6: Ray Diagrams – Convex Mirror
Objective: Draw and interpret images formed by convex mirrors.
Rays appear to come from the focus behind the mirror.
Image formed: Virtual, upright, smaller
Lesson 7: Characteristics of Images
Objective: Summarize image properties based on position.
Table:
| Mirror Type | Object Position | Image Type | Size | Orientation |
|-------------|------------------|------------|-------|-------------|
| Concave | Beyond C | Real | Small | Inverted |
| Concave | Between F & C | Real | Large | Inverted |
| Convex | Any position | Virtual | Small | Upright |
Lesson 8: Applications of Curved Mirrors
Objective: Identify real-life uses and benefits of curved mirrors.
Concave: Solar cookers, satellite dishes, makeup mirrors
Convex: Roadside mirrors, ATM surveillance
