History of Billiards
Much of our knowledge about the early history of billiards comes from accounts of
its popularity among royalty and nobles. Known as the "Noble Game of Billiards"
since the early 1800s, evidence suggests that people from all walks of life have
enjoyed the game since its inception. By 1600, billiards was familiar enough to the
public that Shakespeare referenced it in Antony and Cleopatra.
The cue stick was developed in the late 1600s. Before its invention, players used a
mace, a tool with a large head, to strike the ball. However, when the ball was near a
rail, the mace's large head made it difficult to use. In such cases, players would turn
the mace around and use its handle, called a "queue" (meaning "tail"), to strike the
ball. This eventually led to the creation of the cue stick we know today. Interestingly,
for a long time, only men were allowed to use the cue stick; women were required to Aman Pal Singh
