Ruby Ray the Mega Ray

CROCHET PATTERN BY
Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this mega ray! You can choose if you want to make this mega
ray with a pocket to store mini rays or other fish friends, or without a pocket. The ray with a
pocket requires very minimal sewing. The ray without a pocket requires no sewing.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions that you
may have along the way. Have fun!

Did You Know?

• A stingray’s mouth is found on the underside of their bodies, while a manta ray’s mouth is found
on the front edge of their bodies.
• Most stingrays’ eyes are on top of their bodies. This leaves them vulnerable to anything beneath
them, which probably explains why they spend so much time near the ocean floor!
• Rays vary in size – from 4 inches (10 cm) wide up to 29 feet (8.8m); the largest stingray ever found
weighed 660 pounds (300 kg)!

property of Theresa's Crochet Shop. This written pattern is for

Ruby Ray the Mega Ray i
Materials You Will Need
• Crochet hook size: 8mm
• #7 jumbo weight yarn*: blue (99 yards needed) and white (85 yards needed for non-pocket
version; 125 yards needed for ray with pocket), plus 1 yard of light pink for the cheeks
• #4 medium weight yarn: 1 yard of black for the smile (only used for the non-pocket ray)
• Yarn needle
• One pair of 18-25mm safety eyes (see note 1)
• Polyester fiber fill stuffing

*I used Sweet Snuggles yarn from Michaels for the teal mega ray without a pocket and Honey Bunny
Big yarn from Hobbii for the ray with pocket version. You will only need 1 skein of the main color + 1
skein of white. You can use any yarn weight to make this pattern with no changes necessary.

Abbreviations
ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
inc – increase stitch (see note 2)
sl st – slip stitch

Size
Final measurement for the finished mega ray made with #7 jumbo weight yarn is 24 inches (61 cm)
wide and 21 inches (54 cm) long. If you use #6 super bulky weight yarn, the finished ray will be 14
inches (36 cm) wide and 10 inches long (25 cm).

Notes
1. I used 25mm 3D trapezoid safety eyes and 18mm black safety eyes for my ray with the pocket.
Safety eyes can be purchased from AliExpress, Etsy, Amazon, Hobbii, or at your local craft store.

2. Increase stitch explanation: work 2 single crochet stitches together into the designated stitch.

3. Other than the pocket in the ray with pocket version, this ray pattern is crocheted back and forth
in rows, not rounds.

R19: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 38, inc (42 sts)
R20: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 40, inc (44 sts)
R21: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 42, inc (46 sts)
R22: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 44, inc (48 sts)
R23: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 46, inc (50 sts)
R24: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 48, inc (52 sts)

Fasten off, leaving just a short yarn tail for weaving in. There
are 52 sts across; you will be crocheting the “head” of the ray
on the middle 12 sts. So, insert your crochet hook into the
21st stitch from the right in R24 (Figure 1) and continue:

R25: Sc 12 (12 sts)

R26-27: Ch 1, turn, sc 12 (12 sts x 2 rows)

Wait to fasten off.

Your ray’s body will now look as shown in Figure 2.

Insert the safety eyes between R26-27 of the body, 6-8 visible
sts apart; the exact number of sts will depend on the size of
eyes you choose (Figure 3). Firmly secure the backs onto the
eyes.

Next, thread a strand of plush pink yarn onto your yarn

needle. Insert your needle through the opening left on the
body and out right beside the eyes. Sew 3 tiny stitches at the Figure 2: Finished Top Body Part
corner of each eye. Secure this pink yarn to the beginning end
with a knot. The ends will be hidden inside the body after it is
closed.

Cut a long strand of plush white yarn and knot 1 end; thread
the strand onto your yarn needle and sew little stitches
sprinkled on the top of the ray; I sewed on about 35 spots
(Figure 4). Since the plush yarn sheds the more you sew with
it, you may need to cut use a few strands to sew all of the
spots. Secure the white yarn with a knot; the ends will be
hidden inside the body after it is closed. Figure 3: Eye Placement

Body Without A Pocket

NOTE: If you would like to add a pocket to your mega ray, skip this
“Body Without a Pocket” section and see “Body With Pocket”
instructions below.

With white yarn,

Repeat the exact same steps as Part 1 of the body. Except
when you finish R27, fasten off and leave a short yarn tail for
Figure 4: Finished Spots
weaving in. Now lay the blue part of the body on top of the
white part.

Inserting your hook where you left off at R27 of the top part
of the body (where you waited to fasten off), insert your hook
through the top and bottom parts of the ray (as seen in
Figure 12 on page 05) and begin single crocheting a border
around the ray’s body to join the 2 pieces. About 20 sts
before you finish crocheting the 2 parts together, sew on the
smile and and stuff the ray, as described below.

See Vid #1 on the Materials page: as part of the overview of making

this ray, the video shows how to sew on the smile and cheeks. For
the smile, thread a long strand of #4 medium weight black
yarn onto your yarn needle. Insert it through the opening that
is left between the top and bottom parts of the ray and out
through the bottom white part. Sew a horizontal stitch that is
3 sts wide between R26-27 on the white part of the ray; then
bring your needle up 1.5 rounds lower, grab the horizontal
stitch and insert your needle down into the same spot to
create a “V” for the smile (Figure 5). Now secure the yarn to
Figure 5: Finished Smile
the beginning end with a knot and tuck inside the body.

It’s now time to stuff your ray! Push the stuffing into the
middle portion of the ray (in line with the head bump out),
leaving the 2 sides/wings flat so they can bend up easily. You
want the middle portion to have some shape, but not be too
puffy since stingrays are almost flat. You can also choose to
stuff the whole ray lightly, or to barely stuff the ray at all.

When you are happy with how your ray is stuffed, finish
crocheting the top and bottom of the body together. Do a slip
stitch to join to your first border stitch; then fasten off, and
weave the yarn end inside the body, as well as the other yarn
ends left after crocheting the border. Now go on to the Tail
section on page 05 to finish off your ray.

Body With A Pocket

With white yarn,
Crochet Rows 1-24 as described under the Body, Part 1
section. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for weaving in.

Now as you did with the blue part of the body, insert your
crochet hook into the 21st stitch from the right to begin
crocheting the “head” part of the ray.

R25: Sl st to join, ch 10 (skipping the 10 sc sts below the

chain), sl st to join (12 sts)
R26-27: Ch 1, turn, sc 12 (12 sts x 2 rows)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for weaving in. The finished Figure 6: Bottom Part with Mouth Hole

white part of the body will look as shown in Figure 6.

Pocket

NOTE: Unlike the rest of the ray, this pocket is crocheted in

continuous rounds, not back and forth in rows.

With white yarn,

R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts) Figure 7: Pocket Insert
R5-20: Sc 30 (30 sts x 16 rounds)
R21: (Sc 3, dec 1) 6 times (24 sts)
R22: (Sc 10, dec 1) 2 times (22 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. The pocket will look
as shown in Figure 7. Lay this pocket onto the middle of the
white part of the body (Figure 8). The opening of the top of
the pocket should line up with the slit, or opening, for the
mouth.
Figure 8: Pocket on Bottom Part of Body
Now, as shown in Figure 9, use the yarn tail from the pocket
to sew the edge of the bottom side of the pocket to the
bottom of the mouth opening (at R24) of the white part of the
body.

Then, as shown in Figure 10, and working around the circle,

sew the edge of the top side of the pocket to the top edge of
the mouth opening (or the bottom edge of the chain stitches
from R25). Secure with a knot. The yarn ends will be hidden
inside the body when closed. The pocket opening will now
Figure 9: Sewing on the Pocket #1
look as shown in Figure 11.

Now it’s time to crochet the top and bottom pieces together!
There is no stuffing needing since the pocket (plus whatever
you choose to put in the pocket) forms a ridge in the middle
of the ray.

Inserting your hook where you left off at R27 of the top blue
part of the body (where you waited to fasten off), insert your
hook through the top and bottom parts of the ray (Figure 12)
and single crochet a border all the way around the ray’s body Figure 10: Sewing on the Pocket #2

to join the 2 pieces. When you are back where you started, do
a sl st to your first border stitch. Fasten off, and weave any
remaining ends inside the body.

Tail
You will crochet the tail right to the body (no sewing
required). Insert your crochet hook into the center border
stitch at the back of the ray’s body. Do a slip stitch to join your
yarn to the ray’s body. Then crochet the tail as follows:

Figure 11: Pocket Attached

R1: Ch 19 (19 sts)
R2: Turn, sl st 18 (18 sts)

Do 1 last sl st to join to the body. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail

for weaving in. Weave in the ends.

And now, your mega ray is finished! Time to make some mini
rays or fish friends to go inside the mega ray! Thank you so
much for joining me in making this ray. Enjoy!

Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this little ray! Please don't hesitate to contact me at

Did You Know?

• There are many different types of rays – electric rays, manta rays, eagle rays,
butterfly rays, stingrays, skates, and guitarfish.
• Rays have no bones in their body. Their skeleton is completely made up of
flexible cartilage.
• Rays vary quite a bit in size – from 4 inches (10 cm) wide all the way up to 29
feet (8.8m)!

With blue or gray yarn,
R1: Ch 4, turn, and starting in the 2nd ch from your hook:
sc 1, inc, sc 1 (4 sts)
R2: Ch 1, turn, inc 4 (8 sts)

R7: Ch 1, turn, inc, sc 14, inc (18 sts)
R8: Ch 1, turn, sc 18 (18 sts)

Fasten off, leaving just a short yarn tail for weaving in. There
are 18 sts across; you will be crocheting the “head” of the ray
on the middle 6 sts. So, insert your crochet hook into the 7 th Figure 1: Finished Body, Part 1
stitch from the right in R8 and continue:

R9: Sc 6 (6 sts)
R10: Ch 1, turn, sc 6 (6 sts)

Wait to fasten off. Your ray’s body will now look as shown in
Figure 1. Next, insert the safety eyes between R9-10 of the
body, 3 sts apart (Figure 2). Firmly press the backs onto the
eyes.

Body, Part 2 Figure 2: Eye Placement

With white yarn,
Repeat the exact same steps as Part 1 of the body. Only,
when you finish R10, fasten off, leaving a short yarn tail for
weaving in. Now lay the blue top of the body onto the
bottom, and inserting your hook where you left off at R10 of
Part 1 of the body (where you waited to fasten off), insert
your hook through the top and bottom of the ray (Figure 3)
and single crochet a border around the ray’s body to join the
2 pieces.

body, leaving the 2 sides flat so they can bend up. You will
also sew on the smile before you finish crocheting the 2 ray
pieces closed.

Smile
For the smile, thread a long strand of black embroidery floss
onto your yarn needle. Insert it through the opening that is
left between the top and bottom of the ray and out through
the bottom white piece. Now sew a small “V” in the middle of
R9 – as the smile (Figure 4). Before securing the floss, you can
Figure 4: Finished Smile
also sew 2 tiny eyebrows onto the ray; I loved the eyebrows
on the ray when I made it with acrylic yarn, but found it tricky
to get them to look right on the plush ray.

Now secure the floss to the beginning end of the strand with
a knot and tuck inside the body. Now, finish crocheting the
top and bottom of the body together. Do a slip stitch to join
to your first border stitch; then fasten off, and weave in the
ends.

Tail Figure 5: Crocheting the Tail

You will crochet the tail right to the body (no sewing
required!). Insert your crochet hook into the center stitch at
the back of the ray’s body (Figure 5). Do a slip stitch to join
your yarn to the ray’s body. Then crochet the tail as follows:

R1: Ch 9 (9 sts)
R2: Turn, sl st 8 (8 sts)

Then do 1 last sl st to join to the body. Fasten off, leaving a

short yarn tail for weaving in. Weave in the ends.
Figure 6: Finished Ray

If you would like to make a pancake-inspired ray, skip the

Spots section below and go on to the Syrup section.

Spots
Thread a long strand of white yarn onto your yarn needle,
insert it through the bottom of the body and out at the top.
Sew little sts sprinkled on the top of the ray; I sewed on 11
spots (Figure 6). Then weave your yarn back through to the
bottom and secure with a knot. Weave in the ends.

For an easy pancake-inspired ray or “sea pancake,” you can

add a drizzle of syrup and a pat of butter!

Syrup
Note: Unlike the rest of the pattern, this syrup piece is crocheted
in rounds, not back and forth in rows.
With dark brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, sc 8 in first ch* (8 sts)
*if you prefer to start with the magic circle, work 8 sts into your magic
circle
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Ch 4, sc 3)* on top of the final st from R2, sc 3, (ch 3, sc
2), sc 3, (ch 4, sc 3), sc 4, (ch 4, sc 3), sc 5, sl st (16 sts)
*the instructions inside the ( ) are crocheted on top of the previous stitch
and thus do not count toward the final stitch count Figure 7: Syrup

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Fit the syrup onto
the top of the ray, with the widest stretch between drizzles
fitted behind the eyes. Use the invisible seam stitch to sew
the syrup to the ray – inserting your needle down through the
top of the syrup piece and up a few sts over. Be sure to do a
stitch into the tip of each drizzle to secure them. Secure with
a knot and weave the ends inside the ray’s body.

Butter
With yellow (or cream) yarn,
R1: Ch 3, turn, and starting in the 2nd ch from your hook, sc 2
(2 sts)
R2: Ch 1, turn, sc 2 (2 sts)

Wait to fasten off. Starting where you left off at the end of R2,
single crochet a border all the way around the little square
until you are back where you started – 6 single crochet sts
around.

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. As you did with the
Figure 8: Finished “Sea Pancake”
syrup, use the invisible seam stitch to sew the butter to the
top of the syrup. Secure with a knot and weave in the ends.
And now, your ray is finished! Thank you so much for joining
me in making this ray. Enjoy!
