Topic: Number Expressions

Competency: Express a number in exponential form.

Learn
How to find the exponential form using prime factorization:
1. Write the exponential form of 1024.
a. Divide by prime number 2 until it’s no longer divisible.
 1024 ÷ 2 = 512
 512 ÷ 2 = 256
 256 ÷ 2 = 128
 128 ÷ 2 = 64
 64 ÷ 2 = 32
 32 ÷ 2 = 16
 16 ÷ 2 = 8
 8÷2=4
 4÷2=2
 2÷2=1
Alternatively, you can recognize that 1024 is equal to 2 raised to the power of 10.
Therefore, the exponential form of 1024 is 210.

2. Write the exponential form of 1296.

a. Divide by prime numbers: Start dividing 1296 by the smallest prime number, 2, until it’s no
longer divisible.
 1296 ÷ 2 = 648
 648 ÷ 2 = 324
 324 ÷ 2 = 162
 162 ÷ 2 = 81
b. Continue with the next prime number: Now, 81 is not divisible by 2, so move to the next prime
number, 3.
 81 ÷ 3 = 27
 27 ÷ 3 = 9
 9÷3=3
 3÷3=1
c. Write as exponents: You now have four 2s and four 3s.
 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 24
 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 34
Alternatively, you can recognize that 1296 is equal to 6 raised to the power of 4.
Therefore, the exponential form of 1296 is 64.
