I had never done a personality test before this assignment so this was interesting to
learn that my personality type is INFJ or what is known as the advocate. INFJs are often
described as insightful, idealistic, and quietly determined. I like to think that that is a
good way of describing myself. INFJS tend to be future focused individuals who value
deep meaning, authenticity, and long term vision. I like to think these traits have
influenced me and that they influence my life and my goals both personally and
professionally. I will reflect on three personal goals and three professional goals that
guide me while also considering the role of a plan b in my life. One of my professional
goals is to lead with purpose in an organization that shares my values. This is one of
those goals that I have had my whole life. My dad used to work for a company that he
did not agree with and I saw how it affected him and made him sad at times so from a
young age I knew that when I got a job I wanted to work where I believed In what I was
doing. I think that a library, archive, or museum that centers on community equity and
education would line up very well with my values. I want to help shape a workplace
culture that supports inclusion and ethical decision making and a shared vision of
service. If the personality test is to be believed then I think that my core strengths as an
advocate such as long term planning and empathy help me envision how people and
systems work together. And I hope to use that insight to make LAM institution more
effective and humane. My second professional goal is to specialize in user engagement
in libraries. I would really like to align my work with the needs of the community.
Especially in libraries whether or not it’s redesigning a library's digital interface or
facilitating relationships and partnerships with local organizations. I want to make sure
that the services of the organization that I work at are responsive, intuitive, and
inclusive. I would especially like to make sure that voices of those who are overlooked
are amplified and make information as accessible as possible. And my final professional
goal is to contribute to a long term project that creates a social impact. Luckily I have
kind of accomplished this goal. I have been doing an internship at the Utah state
archives and I have had the opportunity to help them with a burial record project and the
work that I have due will be available to the public here soon. It’s been super cool to
work on a project that impacts the community. It’s especially been cool to see how
diverse my home state actually is because sometimes it does not feel very diverse.
Those are my professional goals. My first personal goal is to live a balanced life. INFJ
personality types have a hard time finding balance because they like to take on too
much. And I can definitely attest to that as more often than not I have a lot going on at
any given time. So it would be nice to find some hobbies that keep me grounded outside
of the academic and professional and hopefully achieve some sort of balance in my life.
My second personal goal is to deepen my self knowledge and emotional intelligence. I
am a naturally introspective person but I want to develop my emotional resilience. I
have set a personal goal to work on my self awarnes to help not just understand my
strengths but to also help me confront my fears and set boundaries. I want to grow and
change how I interact with other people so I can relate with them better. And my last
personal goal is to build lasting meaningful relationships. A lot of INFJs are reserved
and kind of quite myself included, but we deeply value authentic relationships and I
think everybody does. I want to nurture connections that are honest and supportive and
mutually enriching. Wether it’s friendships, mentorship’s, or community groups I want to
be someone who shows up consistently and be someone who cares for others. I invest
a lot of time and care into my plans so sometimes having a plan b can feel like I’m
admitting defeat or doubting my own plan. But I do see the value In having a plan b. It’s
less about giving up on your current plan and more about staying flexible and making
sure that you’re ready for anything. So once I changed my mindset I came around to the
idea of having a backup plan. I want to work in a library but if that doesn’t pan out an
archive or a museum or a research center will work as well. It’s best not to be set on
one idea or plan but to have flexibility with that plan. When looking at the personality
quiz results it describes INFJs as living with quiet determination and an unwavering
sense of purpose. While I wouldn’t say that my sense of purpose is unwavering I do
agree with that quiet determination part. The values that I have are a huge part of me
and they define me. I look forward to creating a life and career that is guided by
empathy, clarity, and intention.
