Tutorial Sheet 2
Q1. The forward characteristic of a diode is shown in Figure below. Use the
characteristic to determine (a) the current flowing in the diode when a forward
voltage of 0.4V is applied, (b) the voltage dropped across the diode when a
forward current of 9mA is flowing in it, (c) the resistance of the diode when the
forward voltage is 0.6V, and (d) whether the diode is a Ge or Si type.
(a) From Figure when V =0.4V, current flowing, I=1.9mA
(b) When I=9mA, the voltage dropped across the diode, V=0.67V
(c) From the graph, when V =0.6V, I =6mA. Thus, resistance of the diode, R= V/ I = 0.6/ 6×10^-3
=0.1×10^3=100 ohms
(d) The diode is ON at approximately 0.2V. This suggests that the diode is a Ge type.
Q2. Find For the series diode configuration shown in Figure below,
determine VD, VR, and ID
Solution: Since diode is forward biased then
Q3 Find determine VD, VR, and ID
Solution: As the diode is of Silicon having cut-in voltage as 0.7 Volts, therefore the Diode is
OFF. Therefore, Current ID = 0, VR=0, and VD = 0.5, the battery voltage will appear across
diode.
Q4. A bipolar junction transistor has beta=100 and base
current= 8 micro ampere. What is the collector current?
Solution: Given;
Base current (Ib) = 8 micro amperes
Beta=100
Since Ic (collector current) =beta*Ib (base current)
Ic (collector current) =100*8 micro ampere=0.8 milli ampere.
[Link] common-emitter current gain of the transistor Beta=75. The
voltage VBE in ON state is 0.7 V. Find IE and RC. in the circuit given
below.
Solution:
IE =12- 0.7 /10k, IE = 1.13 mA
IC = 75 / (75+1) x (1.13) = 1.12 mA
VCE = 12-1.13x10 -1.12 Rc -(-12) V =6V
RC= 5.98 Khom’s
