Grade 4 PDF

Chapter 2 focuses on modeling numbers up to 10,000 using base ten blocks, emphasizing the importance of regrouping to minimize the number of blocks used. It includes exercises for students to practice modeling various quantities, such as 1200 and 2065, and encourages reflection on the relationship between block types and place value. The chapter also presents a scenario involving a fast-food restaurant to apply the concepts learned in a practical context.

CHAPTER 2

You will need

1 Place Value • base ten blocks

Goal Model numbers up to 10 000.

Chantal is studying spiders.

She has found a spider that can lay 1200 eggs.

? How can Chantal model 1200 with the least

number of base ten blocks possible?

Chantal’s Model

I can model 1200 with 1200 ones blocks.

If the ones blocks are regrouped as
tens blocks, I only need 120 blocks
to model 1200.

A. If the tens blocks are regrouped as hundreds blocks,

how many blocks will there be? Make the new model.
B. 10 hundreds blocks can be regrouped as a
thousands block. Regroup the hundreds blocks.
How many blocks are there now?

Reflecting
1. a) Which model uses the least number of blocks?
b) How is this model related to the Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
digits in a place value chart?
2. How is building a thousands block from
hundreds blocks the same as building a
hundreds block from tens blocks?

Checking
3. 3 spiders laid a total of 2065 eggs.
a) Model 2065 with hundreds, tens, and ones blocks.
b) Model 2065 using the least number of blocks
possible. You can use thousands, hundreds, tens,
and ones blocks.
c) Did you need all 4 types of blocks in part b)?
Explain why or why not.

Practising
4. A monarch butterfly migrated 3256 km.
Find 3 ways to model 3256.
Draw each model.
5. Write the number.
a) b)

6. If you used only 1 type of block to model each

number, how many hundreds blocks would you need?
How many thousands blocks would you need?
a) 2000 b) 5000 c) 9000

7. A fast-food restaurant has a sign that reads

4562 hamburgers sold.
Each week for the next 5 weeks, the restaurant
sells 100 more hamburgers.
a) Model 4562 using the least number of blocks.
b) Add blocks to your model to include the
additional 100 hamburgers sold each week.
Regroup blocks so the model uses the least
number of blocks.
c) What should the sign read at the end of 5 weeks?
d) Which blocks changed in your model? Why?
