Heat and Temperature - Notes (Part 1)

Heat is the form of energy that flows from hot to cold bodies, measured in joules (J). Temperature indicates the degree of hotness or coldness, with the SI unit being Kelvin (K). Heat energy flows from higher to lower temperatures, affecting temperature, state of matter, expansion, and combustion.

CHAPTER- 6

TEMPERATURE AND HEAT - (Part -1)

1. What is heat? What is its SI unit?

Ans:
The form of energy that flows from a hot body to a cold body is called heat
energy.
Heat energy is measured in calories or joules.
The SI unit of heat energy is joules (J).

2. What is temperature? What is its SI unit?

Ans:
The degree of hotness or coldness of an object or a place is called temperature.
Temperature is measured in degree Celsius, degree Fahrenheit or Kelvin.
The SI unit of temperature is Kelvin (K).

3. What is the direction of flow of heat energy?

Ans:
(i) Heat energy flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower
temperature till the temperatures of both the hot and cold body become the
same.
(ii)When the heat energy flows into a body, it warms the body. When it flows
out of the body, it cools the body.

4. List the effects of heat.

Ans:
a) Change in temperature: On adding heat to a body, its temperature increases.
On removal of heat from the body, its temperature decreases.
b) Change of state of matter: On addition or removal of heat to/from a body,
there is change in state of matter.
Ex- change of ice to water on addition of heat etc.
c) Expansion of a substance.
(Gaseous substances expand the most and solid substances expand the least)
d) Combustion/ burning takes place.
