Grade 9 Technology – CAPS Summary Notes

(South Africa)

1. What is Technology?
• Technology uses knowledge, skills, values, and resources to design and make products or
systems that meet human needs.
• The design process is central: investigate, design, make, evaluate, and communicate.

2. Major Topics by Term

• Term 1 – Structures & Design: Types of structures, forces, stability, and drawing skills.
• Term 2 – Mechanical Systems: Gears, pulleys, belt drives, and control mechanisms.
• Term 3 – Electrical/Electronic Systems: Circuits, resistors, LEDs, transistors, and Ohm’s Law.
• Term 4 – Systems Integration & PAT: Combining systems and completing design projects.

3. The Design Process

• Investigate – Identify a problem and gather information.
• Design – Create a design brief with sketches and constraints.
• Make – Plan and construct using tools and materials safely.
• Evaluate – Judge how well the product meets the design brief.
• Communicate – Present with drawings, notes, or diagrams.

4. Key Concepts
• Orthographic Projection – Drawing different views of an object.
• Gear Systems – Spur, bevel, worm, rack and pinion.
• Pulley Systems – Fixed, movable, block & tackle.
• Mechanical Controls – Ratchet & pawl, cleats.
• Electronic Components – Resistors, LEDs, diodes, sensors.
• Ohm’s Law – Relationship between voltage, current, and resistance.

5. Assessment
• Tests, projects, and a Practical Assessment Task (PAT) are used.
• PAT includes investigation, design, making, and evaluation.

6. Study Tips
• Revise each term’s topic using diagrams and key definitions.
• Practise drawing orthographic views and circuit symbols.
• Do past PATs or exam-style tasks to build confidence.
• Relate concepts to real-life examples of systems and devices.
