What Is Literacy?
• Literacy is the capacity to read, write, and utilize numeracy
by using at least one method of writing. It comprises the
reading, writing, and numeracy competencies of students. It
is related to the skills to recognize, comprehend, decipher,
produce, communicate, and calculate using textual or
written objects in various settings (Montoya, 2018).

where children use rare words, descriptive words, and
complex topics

2. Storybook reading – reading aloud to students using poems,


children’s stories, and informational books

3. Phonological awareness activities – comprise activities and
games that increase children’s awareness of sounds. Examples

5. Support for emergent reading – encouraging children to
start reading books by designing a library, conducting repeated

7. Shared book experience – using big books to demonstrate
the parts of a book, to teach left-to-right and top-to-bottom

investigate topics that are interesting for them
